*Disclaimer* Did not know whether this belongs in Shoguns or Blackpowder and Antiques so I put it in both *Disclaimer*

A guy I know just picked up an old shotgun labeled J Stevens Arms and Tool Company and called me about it. I was in the middle of doing dishes but this is more important. He says it is pretty rusted and aside from the company name all he could make out was a "904" on the bottom of the barrel, and "Electro Steel* Choke Bored." Trigger pulls clean and it opens up nicely.

Anyone want to let they know what they think of the piece? Age? Value? I'll get some pics next time I see him.

What about shooting factory loads in it? Is Electro-Steel the same as Nitro?

Electro-Steel is likely a brand name for fluid steel. Fluid steel barrels were introduced pretty much at the same time as smokeless (nitro) powders, but one doesn't prove the other. The proof marks will confirm the intended loads.

Regardless of what the proof marks show, the condition of this gun sounds poor and it probably shouldn't be fired.

Look and see if its a belgien one, they where shiped by thethousnads into the states and Canada etc under many different names

Guns marked "J. Stevens Arms and Tool Company" were built in Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts between 1886-1915. Prior to that they were marked "J. Stevens & Co." and after that they were "J. Stevens Arms Co.". As an American gun it will have no proof marks. It is likely that the gun has short chamber(s).
