I went on a Jack O'Connor kick and ordered most of his books from the public library-the man is a legend but I'm sure he'd get roasted now a days. He actually admits to missing the odd one-hitting something other than the lungs-he shot a lot of things with too puny a calibre. It would be refreshing to watch him host a hunting show-not many worth the time now a days. The next glory shot where the 'PRO' hunter is describing how he hunted hard-like a half mile walk from a ranch trail is hard lol. The new shows are out on WILD TV-that 'Camobooty Outdoors' is pathetic what a pair of retards. Even fake boobs in camo can't save that one.

Old Jack was a man in a different era but he sure lived life to the fullest. Lots to be leaned from his life. He was a great author no doubt!
What worked in O'Connor's day still works today.
He was big on bullet placement and using enough gun, but not so much as to preclude that.
I'm always amused by the guys enamoured of the current wave of 'magnum-itis'. Game is no more dificult to put down than it was 150 years ago.
At the other end of the scale, there is a new wave of 'reduced recoil' loads.
Again, this amuses me. If you can't handle the recoil of your rifle, why not step down to a calibre you can manage? Turning a .300 Magnum into a .308 potential rifle seems a bit of a non-starter.
I watch our locals manfully putting 15 rounds of full power .338 and .300 mag loads downrange in our club matches, and my hat's off to them - but, it's rare one of them gets a decent score on paper.
Sure, they are getting practice with their hunting rifle, but they are also developing a 'recoil awareness reflex' otherwise known as flinching.

Yes and no....certainly what worked in Jack's day would unquestionably work today but there have been a lot of advancements in bullet technology, optics, range finders and the list goes on that have changed the rules to some degree. The sectional density of a bullet was critical at one time too but it sure isn't today, just as theories like the KO theory have been made obsolete by bullet technolgy. It's good to read and learn from the old but it's also important to remember that technology has changed the playing fielld in ways that old Jack never imagined.
