Jammed Marlin 1895

In all my years of owning this rifle I never had it lock up on me but murphy is alive and well My son was loading my Marlin 1895 45-70 today and managed to jam it. Apparently he only had put one cartridge into it when the loading gate wouldn't move back. He then tried to cycle the lever to close the bolt and it was frozen in place in the open position. I havn't been able to find the owner's manual to see if there may be any hints in it. Any suggestions as to how to fix this would be appreciated. thx

I went to the Marlin website and downloaded the PDF manual. As soon as I read it it was obvious what was wrong and why. Do not try to load the magazine with the lever open. Bad things can happen. Lever should be closed when loading. As soon as I removed the lever from the action everything cleared. I guess I loaded all the time with lever closed - odd.
