Jamming problem with Steyr M9A1

Just got back from the range, and was a bit dis-appointed by my new Steyr M9A1. First round ever didn't even load into the chamber, then the pistol would jam once or twice per clip. A person working at the range suggested it was the ammo I was using. I had brought with me America Eagle ammunition. I didn't have time to try different ammo but will next weekend. Outside of different ammunition (anyone have a brand they know works well in my model?) does anyone else have suggestions? Could this be a lemon from the factory, or is that rare?

The one bright note from my range visit today was my 1930's FN worked flawlessly.
 
Did you give the gun a good clean up after you got it? Factory grease and "dirt" should be cleaned off before you use it. Also expect a slight break in period where a few "issues" will happen (FTFs, FTEs) of about 400-500 rounds. Most guns need this...make sure to clean/oil it properly for this too.
 
American Eagle is the best all round inexpenive ammo, if the gun was cleaned and lub and jam with this ammo, this gun might be a lemon or your gripping is incorrect.

The gun sit very low into your hand and the kick is stright backward, which is sensative to limp wristed. or your thumd ride on the slide release will also cause jam.

give winchester 115 white box a shot . FTE was like 1 in 250 ... same gun ... shes comes with a tight hard spring and likely needs better ammo to break in and then go back to the cheap stuff ... my 2 cents

A field strip and detailed clean is probably the best suggestion. I'll also take the opportunity to pimp the Frog Lube. ;) There are also a few aftermarket parts you can install as well (guide rod, reduced 1911 spring). Mine's run flawlessly - not a single FTF or FTE. I've used AE, Winchester and several types of Remington. 115 to 147-grain.
 
is it a brand new one? it also take some time for gun to start shooting well. I have Steyr, no problems here with any ammo
 
I've found that sometimes the mags can be the problem. Try down loading the mag from full cap and see if that changes anything.
 
Thanks to everyone who posted a reply here. To answer some questions the AE was 115gr, and the Steyr is(was) brand spanking new. I did take it apart while reading the manual, and it looked to be clean and ready, but as some of your folks mention I should have cleaned and oiled it. I'm going to try all the different tips given here and report back if anything changed.

Once again, I am impressed with the helpfulness of fellow CGN'ers.
 
get the hottest loads you can find for the first 1000 rounds. I was almost appalled at how strong the spring was on my buddies brand new steyr. Good thing he is a great big fat strong fvcker. But I LOVE LOVE LOVE the sights on that thing.

Sorry, if the gun doesn't run at capacity out of the box with any factory new ammo, its a lemon. Sorry you bought a lemon, but I'm not surprised..

Bulk 115gr ammo is notoriously lightly loaded these days, lots of info on Glocks new & old experiencing the same problems.
 
Well I went back to the range tonight with a box of Fiocchi 124gr, and the pistol performed 100%. I know 50 rounds is probably hard to judge by, but the last 50 of AE had at least 5 FTE and 1 FTF, so I"m seeing a positive difference already. I compared the two bullets, besides the grain difference, the Fioochi has a shorter bullet, I'm not sure if that would change anything, my knowledge on this is fairly new. The extra couple of dollars spent on this ammo seemed to pay off. Thanks again for all the thoughts and tips. Hopefully this solved the issue.
