I recently bought a lot of .257" bullets - the seller tells me they were from an estate, so does not know their origin. One bag of 100 bullets appears to be vacuum sealed - in felt pen is written "Janzen .257 84 grain P.P." I found the name Dale Janzen on internet associated with Chinchaga Bullets in Alberta. I presume that he was the maker - that name spelt with a "z" is a bit unusual.

Does anyone know if these were made to be target bullets, varminting bullets or deer bullets? From looking through the plastic bag, I would describe them as flat base, with a "hollow point" perhaps 0.075" in diameter that is mostly filled with core material - so quite a bit like the Woodleigh Protected Point bullets that I have.

On the bag, I have written the name "Chinchaga" with a question mark

Interesting find. Sorry I can't answer your question but if you are unable to determine bullet type (target, varmint, game) I would use them for range practice/target.

mikeelliot - you might be correct - so far as I can see on Internet, Chinchaga Bullets appear to be target bullets - if that is the same "Janzen" - I do not do Facebook, so can not see their "home page". I am "thrown off" a bit about what I assume is a Protected Point design - I am not familiar with that design on target bullets - I read the operation might be or have been in Ponoka, Alberta - appears there was a "niche", at least at one time, for "custom" bullet makers. My acquaintance has some Cauterucios made bullets from USA - they look very similar to Sierra Palma 155 grain - Bob Cauterucios was also apparently a "custom" bullet maker, some years ago.

Those were undoubtedly made by Dale Janzen [Chinchaga Bullet Company]
He worked out of Peace River Alberta, and made both target and hunting
bullets. Many hunting bullets were bonded. I believe he is still active, but
is now at Ponoka.

I have several boxes of his bullets [all hunting types] They tend to be
quite accurate, and have decent BCs. I have Dale's bullets in 7mm, .308
and .311 diameters. The 176 grain 303 [.311] bullets are smoking accurate
in my rebarrelled 1910 Ross

Rebated boattails are common on his bullets. They tend to be a bit fragile if
pushed hard, but are great at 1600 - 2800 fps. Dave.

Very cool. Would be interesting to hear what these were made for. To me they look like a 25cal version of a .243" 68gr FB target bullet.
