Like everyone else, I'm left endlessly cleaning guns after the fall season is over. Seeking a remedy I did what any reasonable man would: checked the internet for open seasons in every country in the civilized world! Bingo, sika hind season in Ireland. :)
One call to John 'Sika' Fenton later I'm packing a bag and off!! Best part is, I'm officially middle aged this year and its considered a birthday present and not an expense...... I definately married right. :) Sunday I arrive in Dublin and head to the Wicklow mountains for four days of unlimited hunting. John even supplies Sako rifles with 'dampers' that would land me 10+ years in the clink here in Canada so I can live out my mafia deer assassin dreams legally! Now to see if I have the makings of a civilized Euro hunter or am a dyed in the wool, Canadian, sleep on the ground, backpack hunter. :)
Wish me luck!

best of luck and I hope the weather stays dry for you ,lots of pictures please ,ps did you order up a plad jacket ,Dutch

Doug,
as in many countries in europe male season closed end of January, it will be only hind and calf even male but less than one year.

we had good time fishing and hunting small game.

Hinds only for me at this time of year, which is good since I could use some trigger time. Stag hunting is fall to January and supposedly his clients get a few medal heads every year. My trophy is a warm barrel so I'm a bit out of touch with the details on actual sizes.

My grey Stanfields sweater is in the bag so I will likely be Fudding it up BC style...... good times!

If you don't mind me asking what does a hunt like this set you back? We are planning a family vacation to Ireland in the few years and would like to sneak away for a couple days if I can.

I was in the Wicklow mountains several times a few years ago. Hiking, not hunting, in May. We saw lots of deer (which , given how much my wife talks while she walks, is a testament to their abundance!). We also got chased by a pretty sinister looking goat. Self defence? Absolutely beautiful down there. They filmed much of Braveheart there, or so the locals told us.
Have fun!
Dave

So I'm back and the short of the story is that it was an amazing week. Lots of hiking in the mountains, lots of long stalks, lots of deer down. The outfitter and accomodations were top notch too.
Details and photos in the next couple days as I'm about to get on yet another plane for work. :(
