Hi fellow cgn'ers

I have a little question since I have always uses Bartlein barrels with 5r rifling in my precision rigs
I wanted to give JC barrels a shot since I have heard good reviews amd I like to encourage a Canadian manufacturer
Any pro or cons for either 4 or 6 grooves?
Thanks

I think twist Matters More than grooves ...... the newer vld Bullets some times require a faster twist ..... length of bullet and RPM of bullet (in flight)

I was also told By a very smart Person that if shooting cast Bullets less grooves are Better (5 grooves better than 6)

Matters less using jacketed

5 and 6 grooves gives better support for the pilot on the reamer so that's kinda nice, but they all shoot great either way.

Did you notice a difference on cleaning?

I have 4 and 6 groove JC .30cal barrels and they stay very clean and don’t seem to pick up copper.
I only clean my TR or Fclass barrels every few hundred rounds but I clean both the same way.

Check out "Ultimate Reloader" on youtube. Gavin Toobe, the channel's author, has done some incredible work with custom barrels with well documented process on rifling.

JC has always been amazing with his barrel builds, and is under no pressure to sell you an in stock product, so you'll be getting a barrel that you need, not one he wants to liquidate. I've found some "custom builders" want to sell you what's gathering dust in the shop, instead of what works for YOU.

If he recommends a 4 twist, stick with it. You may have to wait a few weeks, but in the end, they are works of art. My best group ever was from one of his 26" 4R 6.5X47 Lapua chambered barrels, as verified by Keith @ Milcun, 5 shots under 1.4" @600 yards.

Give JC exact measurements for your loads; bullet, COAL, base to ogive, neck tension etc, and he'll craft you a perfect barrel. Send him your action and brake for the best results, along with a dummy round seated as you would.

I have a JC barrel in .243 Win, 1 in 7.5 twist in his lightest taper, it is a tack driver. I put it on a Defiance AN-Ti action, with scope it weighs just 7.6lbs.

I was always told smaller faster cartridges 6mm and down with light bullets you want 6 groove. Specifically 224 and down for sure. 6mm and up with heavies doesn’t matter as much. If you go jacketed and faster twists I was told more grooves again as they evenly cut in vs removing more material in a specific area causing possibly jacket separation.

I can’t tell you for sure on this just what I’ve been told by a few people now. I shoot mainly 5r on medium and larger calibers and 6 groove on 223 and 20’s
