Hi, I have an old venerable JC Higgins Model 50 in 30-06, its stock has been repaired at the grip area and is now splitting at the for-stock area, basically its time to retire the stock. I did searches on Google and comming up with limited result in finding replacement wood or synthetic stocks. I get conflicting info on what to look for as JCH rifles were Belgian FN's and/or Mauser 98. I'm certainly not the first looking for this and I'm counting on anyones previous expériences in exactly what I need or at least point me in a direction.

I am fairly sure you have a commercial FN 98... at any rate the Mauser 98 and the FN 98 will fit the same wood.

Yep. Commercial Mauser made by FN. Then barreled by High Standard with a High Standard made chrome lined barrel for Sears and Roebuck Co.
Boyd's should have a stock.
You'll want this too. No W's.

The mag well may be slightly different than the replacement stock.I have two ........a .270 + 30-06

You will have a very hard time getting one that is inletted for the two-piece trigger. Also as mbog3 mentioned, the "tungs" on the bottom metal may be a little shorter on the M50. Most stocks made for the commercial M98 is based on the bottom metal with a locking screw.

You may get some info here: http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/foru...099-Churchill-Mauser-and-JC-Higgins-Fn-Mauser

and here: http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/foru...Higgins-Model-50-dressed-by-Boyd-s-Pics-Added.

I used the bottom metal from another commercial mauser as the inletted area left a gap with the Model 50 bottom metal.

I also replaced the trigger with a Boyd's Trigger to accomodate the stock inletting. If you had a chance of comparing the Model 50 stock with a Commercial M98 stock you would see what I mean. As far as I could tell, most all the wood between trigger and magwell would have to be removed to accomodate the Model 50 trigger.

I used the Boyd's Stock and Packmaier Recoil Pad and is pleased as punch, forgot to order the trigger at the time but lucked out on one on the EE. See links for pictures.

BTW: I really enjoy the rifle, very accurate.

NL Hunter, thanks for the links the pics are nice and your rifle looks really good ! just for the sake of asking is your original stock for sale ?? LOL

Sorry, not for sale. Gotsa keep for the purist in me... Shhhh. Had other member ask as well, as far as I can see these stocks will only fit the JC M50 because of the funky two piece trigger. Don't hurt to put an ad on the EE all the same. The original stock is not that suitable for a higher mounted scope, maybe a small low power. I am sure your stock can be repaired with crossbolts, someone here can probably give some advice. Post up some pics of the damage. Mine has small crack near tang and in the wood between trigger and magwell. I will eventually repair. GL with your project, great rifles.

Got my Vortex Diamondback 4-12 X 40 today, mounting in a few minutes and shooting later this week.

Let me know if you need more info, I researched these quite a bit and there are some memers here that have been incredibly helpful with info as well. Jbmauser and Baribal to name two.

LOL,, thanks, not sure on the mounts I have but its holding a huge Simmons President scope, makes the safty a little tricky to operate but it works. It already has a bolt going througth the pistol grip but very ugly work, the forstock is starting to split lengthwise about 5 inches, its repairable, but before starting my searches I thought it would be easier to find a replacement stock, to my surprise not an easy fix. Presently a friend of mine has it in Quebec city so pics are not possible. One thing I found in my searches and makes me happy is the high quality of the rifle and its worth repairing and keeping. I will evaluate my next step in the following weeks and keep you in mind for reference, thanks to all that replied, all info was very helpfull. :)
