Hello,
I'm helping a friend deal with an estate. In the deceased's things is a Johnson automatic rifle. It's a basket case and seems to be missing the barrel... Who would I speak to about a rifle like this? They seem to be worth big bucks but this one has seen better days.
I'll try to post pictures in a few hours.

Honestly, if it's an incomplete example - the value will be REALLY hurt. I'd be tempted to part it out on Gunbroker. Most of the parts (less bolt and receiver) can be shipped to the US. The odds on you finding the missing bits to make it right is very small.

Most of these guns came from. Century Arms and were in poor/good condition. Barrels were in poor condition. There were very few of them that were much better. I bought a few of the select guns, and they didn't make the grade. The Garand's were better at the time.

they are hell on brass, but on a lighter note there is a new never used barrel wrapped in cosmo and brown paper in my umbrella stand.............one day I ought to clean this place up..........

Need a rifle to go with that barrel?

Is there an interest in theses guns here, or is it mostly in the states?

What is the legalities with the magazines?

Owned one of these in my youth, wish I'd hung onto it. Came from the Dutch East Indies as I recall, very abused. Barrel was so worn that here wasn't enough recoil to cycle the action. ;)

there are a lot of people here who would want it . but without a barrel the price is going to suffer. the barrels are easy to make if you have the extension, support and front sight.

I have one and would be interested in a "parts gun" PM me if interested.

I would like a nicer stock on mine.

Then again, a guy should be able to find a barrel.

used to easy some time ago.........not so much anymore.

They show up at gun shows from time to time, mainly by either people who don't know what they are, or people who know what they are worth so its hit and miss.

Neat rifles.

O/T here, sorry gent's.

The only Johnson I ever handled/fired(long long ago), well, later on that same day, (range Vimy at Borden), it discharged out of battery. Blew itself to bits, totally fragged.
A miracle, there were no serious injuries. Recall the shooter had a bleeding L. knuckle and a couple of slivers, is all. Many of the frag's went downwards, mag ass'y, wood, etc.. Bolt was in the dirt. And fortunately, he had held his L. arm off to the side when he shot offhand.
Only time in 50 years of trigger, I've ever seen a gun let go.

Didn't the Johnson utilize Springfield '03 barrels? A friend of mine with a Johnson is looking for a barrel. His is badly worn.

The two companies were competitors. The problem as the previous posts attest, is the barrels are almost all bad. The gunsmith fix was/is, to bore out the Johnson barrel stub and thread in a turned down '03 .30-06 barrel.

I saw two mint ones today at the International Sporting Arm Fair at the Riviera Hotel today in Las Vegas. Besides seeing a whole bunch of mint matching Lugers and PPK, plus, plus plus!!! Most firearms and even the 17th century were mint or near mint. There were at least 20 firearm auction outfits with major collections worth millions!
