Okay so I'm new to this and let me say I am erkel1 and I have a problem. I thought I could buy a milsurp just once and it would be okay. Maybe just shoot it on the weekends at the range no problem, I'm a big boy, I can handle it. Well that my friends was a pipe dream. I find myself looking for cheap ammo, but what if that runs out, well I could take it up a notch and reload my own, couldn't I? What do you mean berdan primers, what are berdan primers, where do I get them! 284brass, they say I could make it work but it's tough to get as well. Dealing on an svt40, deal not done, but planning to drive 150km this weekend to get ammo before they run out!So for the real question. when you first started collecting milsurps how did you get past the "i better get one and a million rounds of ammo before they run out" stage. I have a steady income, but a 2nd mortgage is not an option according to the wife. I know I should pick a certain category or type or nationality, but i'm worried I might change my mind later and regret the gun I didn't buy. Any advice?

Nope! The only way through this is accepting that you now have this addiction. Good luck, sounds like you need to be your wife's "pusher" now:)

Milsurps are a gateway gun , inexpensive at first, they come in about a million different collectible configurations and they love inexpensive ammo . If you want to gently enter the shooting world buy a 10 000 dollar tack-driving bench rest gun that shoots 9 dollar a round bullets and needs a 10 000 dollar scope .Naw jut kidding that's a gateway gun as well...About all we can do is welcome you to the forums .

I'd like to offer you some advice but I'd be a poor one to get it from. A little over a year ago I was given 2 enfields (my first milsurps) that an older gent wanted out of the house. I now have 30 milsurps. Addicting? No way!!!

I chose to focus on the Russian guns, due mostly to price, ammo availability, and the history behind it. That and the fact that my grandfather would literally come back from the dead to beat me if I had a rifle with a swastika in my possession. Even with that limitation, I am now at the point of using ammo crates as furniture around my house.

Sell the wife, the car, the house, the kids...

Financing problem for your milsurp addiction solved... For at least a couple weeks anyway.

if anyone one here finds a real good deal on a hard to come by gun late at night, and feels that they may relapse and buy it, please p.m.myself and I will personally contact the seller with a cease and desist notice. If you provide a link (the kind I just click on and it opens) it will make my intervention easier, and I can provide your needed help sooner.

i focused on enfields, reload for them, restore for a few friends, etc. the cure? go get a Black Powder gun. might take your attention off milsurps….. i bought three in one week. and more enfield parts cause i need them and a guy had them
so now i have Enfielditis AND front stuffer syndrome.
good luck with your affliction.

From reading your previous posts, your "one and only rifle" (at the present time,) is a Swiss K-31. A very good choice of a first rifle and a very accurate rifle. BUT, it can be even more accurate, and inexpensive if you reload for it. Right now ammunition is not really that expensive, BUT, there is only a limited amount of surplus ammo that is available.

You also mention berdan primers and .284 brass. If you are new to reloading, that is the most difficult way to go. NEW Prvi brass with boxer primers is available and the Swiss K-31 takes readily available .308 diameter bullets. Click on the Trade-Ex link in the advertisers above, and you will find lots of it. LEE makes inexpensive presses and dies. Most of all, get some good books and manuals on reloading, (and start building a good reference library for yourself.)

While the SVT-40 is an interesting rifle, you should also buy a Mosin-Nagant. They are cheap right now, but eventually will increase as time goes by. MOST military ammunition, especially the Communist stuff available right now, uses corrosive primers, so every time you shoot the rifles, clean them IMMEDIATELY. Run two pints of boiling water down the bore to flush out the salt from the primers or it WILL rust.

Welcome to the hobby.

Loading for the K31 requires much care and attention, due to the FACT the the old 174gr bullet looks like 99% of a 'modern' Berger VLD bullet of the same weight and calibre. This means some careful jiggling is necessary to choose the right bullet that does NOT have that super-long ogive of the GP11 cartridge. Diopter and I prolly have 70/80+ years between us of shooting Swiss, and I'm sure he'd join me in recommending that you join with us over on Swissrifles.com - a dedicated Swiss schtuff site with an international flavour. Mind you, we both post here as well, so there's no pressure.

My philosophy is... Spending 75% of my money on cars, motorcycles, expensive wines the last 25% i just waist it on anything that please me... JP.

Well when I first started out I ended up buying a fair bit of firearms (at this point I have owned if I count all that I have sold and currently have, around 34 firearms) without really knowing what I want and when I wanted it (the advantages of being young, single and having a well paying job). Now I have calmed down and figured out what I want and in what order. For example recently I have decided to start up a representative WWI collection with the intents of expanding it slowly over time. The main goal being a example of the main infantry rifles for the major nations, with the secondary arms being a follow up. I somewhat regret the early point of my collecting because I was buying everything I saw. I wasted a fair bit of money on it, but the advantage is that I now know what I want and what I don't want and I wouldn't have gotten that knowledge otherwise (no one else in my family collects firearms so its difficult to see what is out there).

Start small, and work up. If you have a gun range see if anyone there has these type of firearms and ask if you could take a look or maybe even fire a round or two off (most of us love to share our collections, though if you ask to shoot it, make sure you offer to pay for the ammo you shoot). This will help you figure out what you like and what you want (without having to do trial and error by buying everything).

Be thankful you are starting with milsurps. If you went black rifle or precision rifle collecting, you will need that 2nd mortgage!
For milsurps, I would recommend 2 directions: collecting the guns of one WW2 country eg. Mosin, SVT, Tok or collecting the more generic guns of all the warring nations eg. Enfield, K98, Mosin, Ross, Springfield, Arisaka. Either way, the research will become an obsession and you will be scouring gun shows and historical arms shows for the models you need to finish your set!

Thought I had the problem licked, then I went for a little drive to pick up some k31 ammo from a fellow forum member. Well I stopped in at wholesale sports to look around, and since I couldn't leave empty handed, I bought some 7.62x54 ammo. do I have a gun that uses this? NO. Will I have? My svt40 ships tomorrow. Oh and because the guy gave me a deal, theres a good chance theres an sks in the box as well. Erkel stop! Think of the children! (I'm pretty sure they didn't want to go to university anyway).

I stoped buying LeeEnfields... unless they are pre 1906 or .22RF trainers, or are really odd.

but now I keep picking up Martini's. And if anyone tries to pick up my 577/450 brass on the range they will be getting a proper thrashing.

I reload for the most part but I do have a mini stockpile of surplus ammo as well that I really don't shoot just saving it for a rainy day don't worry about berdan primers they generally only come in surplus most ex soviet ammo will be steel cased anyway buy some brass and reload have fun
