Looking at the breech end of the barrels, one breech plug will be cut to allow the other plug to clear. One plug is installed first, the other removed first. There will only be slight gap between the plugs, only enough to allow the one to turn. Hairline thin.
If it is a British gun, the barrels and ribs will be soft soldered together. Sometimes ribs are observed to have lifted. Belgian guns may have barrels brazed together.
Sometimes it is suggested that if the barrels are hung from a hook in a ramrod pipe, and the barrels are struck, they will "ring" if the construction is sound. If the sound is dull, there may be separation.
If any of the soldered joints have failed, repairs are challenging. Even soldering on a replacement ramrod pipe requires care, because the pipe is being soldered to a thin rib which in turn is soldered to the barrels.
