Hey guy's, I was doing some searching for heavier pellets for my 1200fps .177 crosman nitro venom dusk. I seen JSB exact monster 13.4gr .177 pellets. I just bought a tin to try them out. I'm thinking they will shoot around 700-900fps, and I've heard that thats the speed you want because any faster the pellet can tumble or somthing? Anyway are these a good choice for my gun, I'll be hunting game rabbit and under.

I very much doubt the rifle shoots 1200fps to begin with... its just a 'hyped-up advertised speed' pretty sure its shot with the super light alloy pellets that will destroy the gun anyways, and not recommended to be shot from a springer (yes I realize its a piston).

Yes, you are correct, 'the heavier the pellet the better' as you want to keep the fps down so that the pellet stays subsonic.

From what I've read the "1200" fps is from light weight alloy pellets, the advertised speed of my 25cal pcp is 970fps and I found out it was using 19 grain pellets. Some rifles stated you'd get 1200 with alloy and 900 with standard weight lead.

As far as good for your rifle, it all depends on what groups the best. I've got pellets from 5 grains to 16 grains for my 1377 just to see what shoots best.

You may have been better served with the .22 version.Personally I have no love for Chinese or Turkish guns except the SKS Quality control is all over the map.Velocity sells, light pellets equates to dry firing[ damaging gun] and you can't hit anything as it's too hold sensitive .Too heavy for the caliber pellets also hard on gun and best suited for PCP's. Try some Kodiaks /Barracudas.I "had" a RWS 350 magnum in .177 that shot 1100 fps and would go through both sides of a 2x4 at the muzzle. Got rid of it and bought a time proven.22 springer HW80K at 750fps good for any critter under 20lbs.RWS 34/.22 is another great gun. Both tuned with custom kits. Most springers are shipped completely bone dry from the get go making parts breakage common along with premature wear and harsh firing. Gas pistons are not something I am familiar with .Harold

JSBs are generally good pellets so most airguns do well with them, H&N make several 10+gr. pellets even a 15gr. they might be worth a try.

I've had great success with JSB heavier pellets in my Air Arms rifles.

Very accurate at just over 1000fps out to 40-50 yards, of course, no wind or indoors. ;) Not competition targets, but kills squirrels and gophers dead.

With a springer ,when you back off 750-850 you will get more consistent accuracy and less hold sensitivity..........Harold

I have a .22 HW80K too; what pellets does yours like? Mine seemed to be good with H&N Field Target or JSB Exact Jumbo Heavy. Then I put a Vortek kit in it though and now it seems to be H&N Baracuda or H&N Sniper Magnum.
As to the OP, all you can do is try different pellets to see which give the best groups but the ones mentioned sound like a good starting point.

All you need it's to stay away from the speed of sound ( 1125fps @ sea level ) Keep it under 1000fps and it's all you have to worry about.

If you don't have adjustable power you will need find a pelllet that have the right weight to allows you to get around 1000fps or so.... that way you have the maximum teminal ballistic with good accuracy.

Hi guys; I've recently become reacquainted with air rifles after a long absence. I currently have a Benjamin Prowler NP. It's rated at "1200 fps with alloy pellets" and about 950-1000 fps with 7.4 grain lead pellets. Are there limits to performance with heavier pellets? I am interested in small pest control (squirrels).

With your current 7.4gr, if you're actually getting 950fps, that's delivering over 10fpe at the squirrel within 30 metres. More if they're closer. I'd say that's plenty with well placed shots between eye and ear. Going to a much heavier pellet is going to steepen the trajectory a fair bit, meaning you'll have to think more about holdover even at modest ranges. At 900fps+ you're basically shooting a laser out to 40 metres, very little compensation necessary, but dropping that to 700fps with a heavy pellet is going to mean 2 to 4cm of holdover at that distance - get Chairgun Pro software from Hawke, it's free and if you plug in your scope height (centre optic to centre bore) and other stats it'll show you exactly where to expect the pellet to be at any given range. I'm just guessing really. But I mostly don't go hotter than 20fpe, and within my typical squirrel ranges I only have to think about holdover when they're very close, because of scope to bore distance. Between 10 and 30 metres there's nothing to think about, just point and click. That's with an 18gr JSB going 700fps.

I recently bought some JSB Exact Beast Diablo in .177 and they are 16.2gr, in case you want even heavier pellets.

In my experience the really heavies don't work well in springers- they are more for the PCP world. Heavy pellets can create extra stress on a coil springer but a nitro spring should be fine. See how it shoots- honestly you never know... I have a Hatsan AT44 and the factory barrel shot ok- the best pellet for it was the Crosman premier heavy. I put a lothar walthar barrel on it and it just didn't shoot- until I tried JSB heavies and then it shot the lights out. The gun chooses the pellet...

I would 100% try the crosman premiers- anything in the 8gn to 10gn is likely in the wheelhouse for your powerplant. If you have a chrony see what you are actually getting. My bet would be that 13.4gn is too heavy for your rifle...

Being able to put one where you want is the most important thing.

My .177 Stoeger x50 likes the 10.5g Crosman Piranhas and 10.5g Premier domed (1250 count brown box). Youtube says the 10.5g gets the AG to shoot around 910-950fps (which is ideal for .177 springer Magnums) and gives FPE numbers similar to .22's.

I don't hunt with my AG but if I did I would be confident with the .177 10.5g pellet knock down power while providing a flat trajectory and VG accuracy.
