I might be invited on a Bison or Elk hunt soon and want to bring my Marlin 45-70. IF there's a Bison to be had, it will be a juvenile. Bull Elks will be the other choice

I have a few choices of ammunition: either my reloaded 300 Hornady JSP loaded with 47 gr H4198, reloaded 350gr hardcast RNFP from Bullet Bard over 34gr H4198, or 300gr SJHP factory Remington Ammo. .

As I've never hunted this species or hunted with this rifle, I have no experience on what to use. All are accurate out of my gun, and I confirmed a POA/POI at a 100 yard zero with all of them yesterday.

What's the consensus?

Andy at the Bullet Barn knows his stuff and really how fast can you drive a 45/70 ,gas checked with his alloy and you have a hammer

Hard cast seems to be the consensus, so hard cast it is.

I'll check with Andy at Bullet Barn to see how fast I could shoot his gas checked pills before leading starts. Thanks for the tips fellas.

Cast for me! I am using a 490 grain flat nose design based on the beartooth pile driver bullet. Hopefully will connect with a moose in a few weeks...

Leading is more a function of bullet diameter compared to bore diameter rather than speed... go a couple thousandths over bore and you will see very little leading. You will have to slug your bore to determine what +.002ths is...

I wouldn't have a problem using either load. I have used the 300 grain softpoint in my 458 as a plinking load. At some where around 2500 feet it will penetrate about a foot of wet newspaper. Some held together, some separated. At 45/70 velocities the bullet should do well. I have some 300 grain partitions for hunting and it may be something to look for.

I've found common 45-70 factory ammo to be too underloaded for my liking, particularly if bison are involved, and I would recommend the bullet barn stuff.

HSM, Buffalo Bore brands of factory ammo are now available in Canada.
If you fire any of the above from a Guide Gun you will become aware in a hurry that they are not underloaded.

HSM - 430 grain hardcast lead (~ 1750 fps/3000 ft-lbs) ~ $50/box @20 rounds
Buffalo Bore - 430 grain hardcast lead (~ 1925 fps/3500 ft-lbs) ~ $100/box @20 rounds
