I often encounter ducks in ponds when I am grouse hunting, but I never shoot because I have no way of grabbing them in the water. I won't pack waders and was wondering, how are you guys getting ducks without waders, boats, dogs and what not. Seems like a stupid question, but I am just curious.

I am lost with out my old dog, the issue is some ducks refuse to die and some how get 100 yards plus out before you know it. and die out there, also wind and sometimes current.

A dog is a real need when duck or goose hunting and he is always up to the task.

some guys take a fishing rod to cast for them, but its not reliable, also some guys try to shoot where they will land on shore but the wind never allows a flying pattern for that.
Some swamps and lakes just wont allow you to wade in or!!

My dog is the only reliable way to get my ducks! I am 100% confident in his ability, specialy jump shooting. We do not loose many with him.

Duck hunting........ He He He! My first time out, my hubby and I were canoeing down a small river & a few ducks flew up. I pulled up, shot, & fell backwards off the the canoe seat onto my kiester!! Needless to say, the ducks are probably still flying (not to mention laughing.......!! ) This year I hope to be a little more successful!
Wish me luck!

Rickslady is right...if you don't have a dog, waders or a canoe are your only choices, and yes, hunting out of a Canoe can have it's tense moments.

A floating jigger is a pieice of wood shaped out like a small buoy. In the wood are large fish hooks. This is attached to fishing line. You then thow out the jigger(it;s wood so it floats) pull it over the duck it hooks him and in he comes. I have a small jigger that is attached to a collapsable rod and reel, fits right in the backpack.

I carry mine in my back pack. I'll take apicture of it tonight, or tomorrow morning and show you, if I wait til tomorrow morning I'll be able to take some pics of it in use, so I'll wait til then.

There are many ways to adapt. BAck home I know guys who shoot seaducks from 25 and 30 ft cliffs. They tie a rope and harness on their dog and pitch him off. The dog get's the ducks and then two guys pull the dog up with the duck in his mouth. (Absolutely true, and pricelesss and amazing to watch)

Yes, we do have a tendency to improvise. ;)

sealhunter - I am looking forward to that photo - pls provide a close-up image of the jig itself if you are able to......I've thought of using a telescopic rod with a fairly large spoon (with couple sets of treble hooks)....the jig idea may work better.

I assume you are carrying some steel shot for the ducks. Other than that a good dog would be an asset. I have an english springer spaniel who is more than willing to retrieve ducks. Good luck hunting.

I always used a telescoping fishing rod with a cheap reel capable of casting 30 lb test line. What I cast is a floating musky lure with the "swimmer" removed and barbless hooks substituted for the trebbles.
