jump to rifling in .223

Hi,

I just picked up a shiny new Hornady OAL guage on a visit to Cabelas this weekend. I just took a few measurements with the guage and a 50gr Hornady vmax and my H&R Ultra. It turns out that seated at the published OAL of 2.2" (Hornady #7 manual), I have a jump of nearly a quarter inch to the lands . It actually comes out at 0.23" for an OAL of 2.43". If I were to even try to seat that bullet anywhere near the rifling, it'd fall right out of the case

It's a single shot so mag length isn't a factor. If I were to seat the bullet all the way out to the lands, there wouldn't be enough of the bullet in the case to hold it in .

I'm going to see how accuracy improves by seating it out as far as is practical. I imagine that even seating it out an extra 0.1" might make a difference.

In my remmy 700 I found that it shoots best about .01 off the lands.

This oal makes the rounds too long to fit in my AR mags.

I also found that the nosler BT in 50gr is just long enough to work
but the Privi round I got from Jerry @ mystic percision don't even
touch the case mouth at this oal.

Some firearms/bullet combos like to be right on the lands and
some like to be fairly far from the lands...... The only way to tell
is to try it out for yourself.

Have you fired this rifle yet? What is the twist? Perhaps you can use some longer bullets? FS

Yeah, I've put a hundred rounds or so of handloads through it as well as a pile of factory ammo. It'll consistently group about 1.25", maybe 1 and an eighth at 100 yards, which is not bad for a $300 rifle, but i want to see if I can make it a bit better. . It's a 1:12 twist so I'm limited as far as the longer bullets go.
