Jumping Carp invading the Mississippi?

Anybody heard of these? Up to 40 pounds, and their primary defense mechanism is to leap into the air on a ballistic trajectory, posing a real threat to boaters?

Essay question time!

1) Could the Asian Silver Carp bring about sporting nirvana by allowing a fusion of the two classic activities of the sportsman: wingshooting and fishing?

2) Given the very real threat of bodily injury these fish pose to boaters (everybody jokes about the trout being a bloodcurdling menace to innocent canoeists, but these things can get up to 40 pounds), would they constitute dangerous game?

3) If so, what would make a good silver carp gun?

Yep, this has been a news item for a few years now. Serious problem, not just the jumping but the environmental impact. We are continuing to suffer from the release of non-native species by folks from Asia that I guess just don't know better. (Part of the problem is the illegal import and sale of live specimens that then get 'released'. This applies to multiple species.)

I suggest a short barrel semi-shotty with buck shot.

I've always wondered if the japanese fill their balast tanks with water that is infested with the carp fry and then dump their ballast when they get into the Great Lakes due to the low water level.

Then they suck up a bunch of our fresh water and bottle it back home.

I used to use a Beuchat Mundial Elite with excellent sucess:

please remember to kick OFAH in the nuts when you loose wetlands to carp, as they are pushing them as a catch and release gamefish. now ontario will never get rid of them.

I agree with that last statement I am beginning to realize the OFAH has sold out and are just the pawns of industry and tourism bucks, all show and no guts.. CARP SHOULD BE LEFT TO ACT AS FERTILIZER, BEAR BAIT NEVER RETURNED TO THE WATER

Almost every night on WILDTV one of the shows includes some bow fishing. This is 2 guys at the back of a slow moving boat shooting fish as they leap throught the air.


Looks like it would be fun with a shotgun too.

Well now..... Fishing doesn't actually turn my crank too much, but...... shooting flying carp with a shotgun, boy does that sound like fun!! Wouldn't the yuppie cottage owners love that!!! A couple of good ol' boys cruising along, blasting carp as they jumped out of the water.

I saw a documentary on this.
The US fish and wildlife guys could run an electrical current into the water from their boat. The fish were flying out of the water.

At 40 mph people have been hurt when they get hit in the face with a 40 lb carp. The guys were saying it could kill someone.

I have targeted them on occaision, only intentionaly hooked into one once (lost it). They put up a great fight though. They are an excellent sportfish (they get very big and put up an exceptional fight), there is no way in hell we are going to get rid of the species anyway, nobody in their right mind would eat one, so what option besides catch and release is there?

Catch and kill??? Nobody eats Coyotes either but they are pests and need tobe killed. same thing with the carp they are ####ing up the native fisheries so i say kill as many of the bastards as you can. but thats just me. Use em for Bear Bait or just chuck em up on the shore and let the birds eat em.

don't forget Dynamite fishing is always the prefered method of carp killing. BRING LOTS.

Ahh, I see. What about the issue of the feral horses in Alberta? Let them roam free and destroy habitat for elk, deer etc..

But on this issue, bring dynamite for the fish

Carp were introduced to North America back when the railroads were being built, to feed the Chinese labourers brought in to do the work. They have been here for over 200 yrs, our native fish seem to be doing well despite carp and other introduced species (bass, pacific salmon in the great lakes etc.). BTW, pretty sure dynamite would kill every fish within the blast range, not just carp.

I dont think we are talking about the same kind of destruction here. These Silver Carp have decimated the native fish and aquatic life in all the river systems they exist in. I would say we are very lucky that the carp here didnt do the same thing.

And for the salmon in the great lakes, ask any steelheader how much they like the salmon. Native rainbow have taken a #### kicking from the salmon. I would love to sit on a train trussle in August with a .22lr and pick off everyone of them.

Sorry, I assumed carp were carp (my bad). I wasn't aware there was a difference between the ones here and silver carp. As for the steelhead vs salmon thing, it seems that the Americans are more gung ho on the steelhead than we are, yet they are the ones that keep stocking the salmon. WTF is up with that?
