Stumbled across this earlier today and thought i would share it.

I found it quite interesting the polar opposite reactions to people in Holland, and I can see both sides. All 5 of my grandparents lived thought the occupation of Holland in WW2. (5 because my Mom's mother died when my mom was 8 and my Opa remarried.)

Thoughts?

The problem is that many of us ( I am dutch but been living in Canada for last 15 years) were brought up in a justifiable anti-German admospher. Most of my generation heard the first hand accounts of our parents and grand parents of what the Germans had done in our country. Stories of murder, torture, rape imprisonment and worse. Yes this young individual did something courages, however does that one act mitigate all the potential evil acts he partisipated in or at the very least witnessed ?... Personally for me that be a clear no.

Sorry for going off topic but... I want to wish you a belated "Welcome to Canada" !!

What brought you to Canada ??

I have to ask... where did you live in NL? I spent a year in Boven-Leeuwen, Gelderland in '83-'84 learning to speak Dutch, making wooden shoes, drinking beer and eating "frits met" !!

Tot schrijfs !!

I met my first wife when I was in the royal Dutch marines and stationed aboard a dutch navy ship, met her in St. John's. Moved there when my contract ended. Now on my second wife and live in New Brunswick. I'm originally from Arnhem ,Gelderland but my family is Fries and Irish. Bedankt voor the vriendelijke verwelkoming.

Geweldig !!

My friend Theo used to be in the Dutch Marines !!

I remember Arnhem well as we used to visit the art galleries there on school trips. I thought the Openluchtmuseum Arnhem was pretty cool as well.

Straks !!
