So I just came to an agreement on a German made SIG P220 in 9mm with a North American mag release. I've been looking for one for awhile, to go along with my Black Special (20"barrel).

Is there anything that I need to know about these guns? Ammo issues? Special attention needed to any perhaps normally overlooked areas. I tend to be pretty hard on my firearms. I clean regularly but none the less, would like to be sure.

Anything helps.

Thanks Everyone

Nope. Be sure that the magazines have the "rib" along the inside of the spine. The guns were destined for the Phillipines(I believe) and were originally chambered in .38 super. The contract either fell through or wasn't purchased in whole and the surplus guns were rechambered for 9x19 and sold mostly in Canada. So, the magazines were too long(from front to back) for 9x19 so a "rib" was installed that forces the rounds to sit further forward in the magazine. Other than that, they're a standard SIG pistol and should give your many years of good service.

I had no idea that they were chambered in .38 super originally. Mine says 9mm on the box it originally came in. Great gun, super slim grip. :)
If you want mags, I got mine from P-D-ent in Edmonton (I think.)

TDC, I believe P220 9 millimeters were sold from the factory as such, not having formerly been .38 supers.
There's a German code ID chart on Sigforum which identifies many P220s as originally being 9mm. Also, they were produced for many, many years, so I don't think Sig was just re-chambering .38 supers for that many years.

German Sigs IMHO are purely awesome handguns, very well built, that shoot exceptionally well no matter what you feed them. You got your self a nice piece that needs no special attention at all, enjoy.

I don't pretend to be a SIG expert, so I suspect you are correct. From my experience, most of the 220's in 9mm in Canada were from the Phillipine contract. Either way, a good gun.

hey, I'm looking for an earlier W.German made P220/9mm too, got to be with side button mag release ONLY !
Steve, you just took this one from my hands (LOL) ....you beat me couple of minutes earlier with your offer...one lucky guy indeed!

bfiles: Yes, off the EE a good deal too

Wolfstrack: Ha, that is funny, I knew there would be others in line for this gun at that price. I admit I was lucky to get a msg off to him as quickly as I did. In all honesty, I feel your pain, I had the last one that was up (only a week or so ago) taken from my grasp by what could have only been minutes as well. She'll have a good home!

I love mine. The only problem I've ever had, after ten years of steady use, was a bad hammer return spring and that was a easy fix. I can't even tell you how many thousands of rounds have gone down the pipe of mine, but she keeps running and running. When you find OEM mags...buy them because they can be hard to come by, and I do not beliseve Sig even lists them any longer.

It came with 4

I think that will be enough, but I would tend to agree. I guess they are usually pretty expensive too eh?

I have a 9mm 220 with the EU heel release. I got it off the EE a bunch of years ago for a steal of a price.

I always liked the 220 with its narrower grip than the 226.

Interestingly when I went to Barstow for a barrel, they told me this gun didn't exist. Eventually I ended up talking to someone who knew better and managed to get a bbl for it.

Hey Steve, very nice, I like it !
Congrats for your pistol....but I still "hate" you because you grab it faster from hands....LOL....joking of course!
Wish you a safe shooting and enjoy this German jewel !

That's very interesting, I didn't know this.

I have a German made (Marked "assembled by R.P.S.") 9mm SIG 220 with the Euro style heal release mag. The mags do have the curved filler piece.

I'm happy with it, no plans to sell.

Well, who knows about the pistol, but 2 mags have this rib, and 2 do not.

I havn't fired yet, but they seem like the ones without the rib will work as well, just not quite as nice as the ribbed ones. Is there an issue using the non-ribbed mags in this gun? All appear to have originally been stamped .38 Super Auto, and then the two ribbed ones have 9mm Para Stamped underneath

I couldn't tell you if your mags without rib will cause an issue, my experience with them is limited.

ETA: By the way, I will be posting a 220 in 9mm for sale this weekend(hopefully) along with 11 magazines(8 spare, gun will sell with 3) amongst other accessories. If someone is interested now feel free to PM me with questions or offers ;)
