...in .270 Win. Very nice rifle for the price - matte black barrel and synthetic stock for $385 from Milarm. Would prefer the magazine was metal, not synthetic but other than that no complaints. Will have to post a few targets after I get back next week and let you know about the accuracy.

Martin.

The firing pin appears to be crap - half the ammo I fired didn't go bang, although the rounds that did fire were grouping about 1 inch at 100 yards with only a red dot from a bench rest. Great accuracy but lousy firing pin - will have to disassemble and find the problem.

Several of those have caused terrible injuries to shooters. Bolts have blown back hitting guys in the face with factory ammo. If it isn't firing, take it back.

I think the design is flawed and would recommend against the purchase of one. The design is such that a failure in quality control may result in an incident which is more than an annoyance. Preventative measure could be taken but then it wouldn't be a bargain anymore! Regards, Bill.

Well, I'm not convinced it's a POS but there is definitely something wrong with the firing pin design. As for buddy who blew his face off, I've heard horror stories for just about every gun from Tikka's to paintball guns. It happens sometimes...although I suspect there is a good aftermarket niche here for replacement bolt/pin assemblies.

sorry but I have never herd of any rifle but the mossberg's or remington 710/770's failing with factory ammo and to compare it to paintball guns?? I don't think some one has lost their face and a hand from a paintball gun.

any links to this Tikka that failed?

That may be true, but with this gun there are several documented cases that are easy to find. When you shot it it didn't go bang all the time, take it back.

BTW, Leeper who posted above is one of the top gunsmith's in the country, take his advise.

Sometimes a (Sako) picture is worth a thousand words:

According to Beretta USA, there is a recall on certain Sako and Tikka rifles with stainless barrels that were manufactured around February 2004. It has to do with a particular batch of substandard stainless steel and could result in a massive failure. If you purchased a stainless rifle after Feb 2004, please contact the Sako / Tikka Recall Center immediately at 800-503-8869 with your rifle's serial number and they will tell you if your firearm is affected.

As for exploding paintball guns, there's a fair bit of documentation concerning guys getting blasted from their HPA tanks. Turns out that putting a drop of oil in your fill nipple and then flash filling the tank with air causes vaporised ignition of the oil and subsequent explosion of the tank. Remember, these guys are running around with 4500psi fibre-wrapped tanks under their chins.

Fair enough, but I haven't seen ANY documented cases of a Mossberg 4x4exploding, although I've come across the mention of a couple Mossberg 100 atr's having serious problems - and Leeper's advice was merely cautionary at best. Can you give me some links here?

Maybe it's the 100 ATR, I am not sure now. Do a search on www.24hourcampfire.com

Bottom line if you want a cheap new gun there are other choices that don't have these issues, such as the Stevens. You have had a problem with yours right off the bat, use this as your chance to swap it for something that doesn't have these issues.

Indeed and it sounds like a hen peck party is forming...

Yeah but isn't the ATR a cheaper rifle than the 4x4?

I'm beginning to wonder if some folks are mixing the two rifles up in their heads?

I also wonder if they do the same with the Remmy 700, and 710 series?

I'm sure if the 4 X4s series started blowing up there would be pictures all over the internet.
Digital cameras are cheap...so show the proof.

Also I'd like to know more about the design flaws in the 4 x 4.
