So I've been endlessly researching and trying out pistols before I bought my first one. I want to get into IPSC shooting and just general pistol target practice and was torn between a Beretta 92fs, Ruger SR9 or a Smith and Wesson M&P 9 as some guns that I liked. Then I found a P226 22LR which is convertible to 9mm eventually so I jumped on one.

Does anyone here have experience with it? I figure I'm such a new shooter that being able to dump thousands of rounds downrange for cheap will probably be better for developing skills than buying a more accurate 22 like the Mark III?

I figure that the gun is going to outshoot me for a long time yet and then I'll get into a target 22 and a 9mm conversion kit.

Any reviews from people who own a 226 22lr? Any tips for a brand new shooter? I only ever shoot rifles and shotguns really so tips and advice are always much appreciated!

Love my 226 22lr. Shot about 1000 rounds of various types of ammo with some initial feed issues in the first few hundred but none since then. Accuracy differs dramatically between the different brands with my most accurate rounds being cci mini mags. Highly recommended. The only missing feature is bolt hold open after the last round is fired. There are aftermarket options but should have been there from the factory. Great trainer as I use the same frame for 9mm allowing you to use the same trigger and reload mechanics.

Good pistol for training/plinking. Look up GSDesigns on CGN. He makes 3D printed followers that will hold your slide open on empty. He makes two types. A replacement follower to be used with your existing 22LR mags that will hold the slide open on empty but not lock it and an inner sleeve unit that fits into a standard 9mm/40mm steel magazine and utilizes the slide lock on empty.

I went the other way and got the conversion from 9mm to 22lr and I have been really pleased with mine. Only two issues after about 2000 rds is the slide doesn't stay open on empty and my rear sight fell off on the first day I used it. It was a quick fix and hasn't moved since.

I have bulk ammo and it runs on that no problem.

You made a good choice!

I've owned a few Sig .22's, and none of them have cycled bulk .22 very well. CCI minimags, or any reasonable quality ammo, and they functioned perfectly. I do love my .22 Sigs, I just know that I can't feed all ammo through it without having to clear some stoppages.

Tried the 22 conversion a couple of days ago, cycled Federal Automatch, HV Match and Mini Mags without a problem. I'm impressed with the accuracy, seems to be close to my 22 Nighthawk/Marvel conversion for my 1911.

Yeah I agree with the accuracy statement. Those things are bang on.

Love mine. Shoot it about as much as my Berretta 92 with its .22 conversion kit. Break it in with some decent ammo and you shouldnt have problems using bulk stuff later on.

SFRC had the 40cal kits in recently. I was debating about getting it and waited too long. By the time I decided to just buy it they were all gone :(

Very well made kit. Super accurate barrel/assembly.

I used CCI minimag and never had any problems.

Down side... I got bored of shooting it fast. Got back to 9mm p226 slide/assembly quick...

:/
