the SKS are very durable rifle , i wouldnt be too nervous but do give it one thorough over.

welcome to the SKS club but it would take more than a little $$$ to get you into the CZ858, like 4x more. they are nice too. just more expensive.

i enjoy both my sks and cz.:D

I've had several sks's. they are indesructible, accurate, and trouble free.
I haven't cleaned my favorite one for years, it lays in the dust behind the seat of my truck 365 a year. I've yet to have any grief with it. I can shoot gophers just as easily as deer with it. Shoots great with open sights and I've never sighted it. You can treat it very rough cause dent and scatches can't make them any uglier. ammo is usually easy to get.

They shoot AIR pretty good at 200 at least mine did.
SKS :shotgun: person at 200m

CZ-858 :shotgun: Person at 200m

That is the difference in accruacy.

Wow...did not think chrome made such a difference...now why dident the czechs chrome the 858 bore...
I now need a SKS...

oh man i just took my SKS out and holy smokes is it alotta fun.

I've had experience with semi autos (M14) but something about the SKS makes it a REAL fun shooter.

those are two things i never do, leave my sks in my vechicle for a year and not clean it after using it (no matter if the bore is chrome).

The Czech VZ58 IS chromed lined. The Wolverine specified CZ858 uses a cheaper modern made barrel which is plain chomoly.

If you want a real military VZ (except that it doesn't go full-auto), get the CZ Hermex/Marstar conversion of a real VZ. The 858 is just a look-alike with cheaper barrel made for ppl who (strangely) want to hunt with a VZ58.

Personally I find the idea of deer hunting with a VZ858 idiotic and if you can afford an 858, you can afford something better for that purpose.

FWIW, yes, I have a VZ58S and have handled lots of (cheaper made) 858's in person before drawing these conclusions. Don't believe me? Ask 858 owners about fire control group problems and sears, etc. NEVER seen a VZ58S have a faulty FCG, but I've personally seen SIX!!!!! 858's that had malfunctioning FCGs. Draw yer own conclusions.

corrosive eats through chrome no prob in my experience. just give it a week more.

??? you must have had some defective chrome in your bore.

Chrome doesn't generally oxidize from chloride salt exposure.

So what exactly is happening with the 858 FCG? and Sears? Man you 12(3) guys gotta keep rubbing it in. Only reason I aint one, is because I got so PO at C-68 that I sold out pre 95 with no intention of ever getting back in. Well that was my mistake, So the 858 is all I can get. But now your telling me it's junk. Well at least it's not restricted, and if I want to go blasting out in the back forty legally I can, oh yeah, and if I see a deer, during hunting season I can shoot it too, providing I'm using soft point ammo. So there you have it, us non 12(3) people will just have to make due.:canadaFlag:

the 858 isn't junk, it's just that some of them have issues with the FCG and the non-chromed barrel isn't as durable as on a 58.

Solution? Forego the 858, get a normal "restricted" endorsement and buy the Marstar type VZ58S with shorter chrome lined bore and more reliably converted FCG.

you dont think i did the pros and cons of the two? and yet i still decided i rather have a non-rest. over a rest. lined chromed shorter barrel. im happy with my decision and im happy with my CZ858. :dancingbanana:

Sounds good - assuming you didn't get one with a malfunctioning FCG ;)

There's a market for the 858 - but frankly I will never be part of it as I would never want to hunt with one anyhow. It's a range toy - no more, no less.

The 858 is a great bush gun though, light enough to pack around all day and shoots cheap ammo.
