I went out shooting today with my STI ar-15 today and broke the bolt in two! I just thought it was a double feed but when I tried to clear it half the bolt stayed in the barrel. I would guess that this happened around 2k rounds of 5.56/ .223. I just recently changed the gas block and gas tube and now it's out of comission.
The bolt carrier is still in great condition but I haven't seen many bolts for sale seperate. What should I buy?

I have a good slightly used one sitting on my desk. Send me an e-mail, John@wolverinesupplies.com

Regardless what you do, I would get a spare one from Brownell's for the range bag. They have MPI and PT complete bolts for $45.
For spares in the gun bag I keep a bolt, cam pin, firing pin and bolt take down pin.

Sound advice. I also like daniel defense bolts - wolverine sells them. A bit more cash, but in my experience they work well.

It seems strange for this to happen. I have original ar15 colts from 1970s still going great. Don't know
how many cases they have gone through since both were new

Firing pin is probably bent too, get a new one of those.
Had an NEA bolt blow the center out on the 3rd round...pretty impressed with their stuff lol.

As others have said, #### unfortunately happens. I always carry a spare complete BCG in my range bag when I'm running an AR. I've actually been using a Spikes nickel-boron BCG in all of my ARs for a while now, swapping it between them, and keeping the bcg's actually belonging to the individual rifles as the spares. That Spikes BCG must have thousands of rounds on it by now with no problems.

Aww crap you beat me! Me it was at the fourt round with a norc m14, barrel broke and harpoon 15 yard down range.

The one big weakness of the M16 system is the bolt cracking at this exact point. It's supposed to occur at around 15-20,000 rounds. HK tried to fix this by making a thicker and stronger area for the bolt, so far it seems to have solved the problem. IIRC, this is the most common part to break, hence Magpul built an insert for the storage of a bolt in its pistol grips
