Also Bear Defence is not considered "hunting" persay (maybe in Ontario), and neither is the trap/target range, so I'd not worry about having the stick in...just tuck it away in case you end up migratory bird hunting someday, also leave the 2 little rubber rings on the stick.
Also I seriously doubt that you will need to hit something with more then 6 slugs...If you do then it prob' is a Rhino, and not a Bear.
Congrats on owning a crazy 88, I love mine.
BTW don't forget you can load your first round through the eject port right into the chamber after opening the action, then close the action and fill the Barrel Mag' with the other five...saves a step if you are in a hurry (shows it on page 5 of the manual). Don't forget safety on, and finger out of the trigger guard.
