Just took my new M305 out of the box and i have a question regarding the magazine. In all the other rifles or handguns i own you can close the action of the firearm when the mag is inserted without any problems. I was playing with the action of the m305 to see how it worked. I guess everything is how it was suppose to be. Then i inserted the magazine. There is a piece of thin of the follower that sticks out and touches the bolt locking device. The only way i can close the action is by pressing manually on the follower so the action will go over it. I tried with a snap cap in the mag and everything worked fine because the round keeps it lower. Now my question is to know if all of this is normal and it's designed not to close the action on an empty mag. You would have to close the action and then insert the empty mag. Do i have a defective magazine? Thanks for the help.

they don't just close fine, the bolt rams home with force of an express train that's what the big spring is all about-seroiusly the idea is that the minute a fresh loaded mag is inserted, the bolt strips the top round off the mag and chambers it so all you have to do is pull the trigger-

We should warn you to NEVER place a round into the chamber then let the bolt fly.

Instead of me typing alot on floating firing pins and Slamfires, do a search of FAQ's. Lots of good stuff here on CGN

Cheers

Actually, the bolt should remain in the open position with the new loaded mag in until slight rearward pressure on the bolt handle trips the bolt release. Then it will chamber a round.

You'll probably find it easier to load the rifle with stripper clips anyway; just drop a loaded clip in the guide, press down, give the bolt handle a tap, and you're back in business.

you can't depend on the hold open device however- all three of my israelis chamber as soon as a new mag is inserted- i haven't tried the norc- no pressure on the bolt required- and one of those is a brand new trw still in the factory grease

Then it is not fuctioning properly. I realize what you are saying but IMO that is a faulty rifle. I had an CA M14 that did that as well (the only one I've ever encountered that did) and I replaced the part. Never had problems again. I expect my firearms to fuction as intended or I have them repaired or replaced. Maybe I'm just picky?

i'm not buying that one- not on 3 rifles of three different manufacturers unless the israelis did something to make them feed like that- 1 i could see, but 3?- and 1 a factory fresh?- i can see it in a battle situation too- jam in a fresh mag and the bolt goes forward - no need to trip anything -

Well I just looked at my new M14 and it looks like it does the same thing. Basically I will manually lock the bolt open and insert a magazine. The top of the magazine is just below the action release button. Is my rifle faulty. I just got it yesterday :( I hope nothing is wrong with it. Bottom line the action stays open when mag is inserted empty or with a round.

I wish I had another mag handy to try it out.

When the mag loads the last round, the mag follower should hold the bolt open on a properly functioning M14/M1A.

If the bolt is not being held to the rear, either the mag/follower is suspect, or the bolt latch/release is suspect.

The bolt should not be released when a loaded mag is inserted into the action. If it does, something is wrong.

Could be the following:
-Mag/follower related
-Bolt latch/release related
-Trigger group lock up in the stock - related.

More so if it is a wood stock that has compressed where the trigger assembly puts pressure on the stock when locked up.This would make the trigger assembly sit a wee bit higher then normal and would affect mag fit/performance.The Chinese stock are notoriously soft.

Try a USGI fiberglass or a good quality wood stock and/or check all your mags.

My Norc M-14 hold open when I insert a full mag, untill I pull back the handle to release the hold open (as it's supposed to). However, my Mini-14 often releases the hold open when an empty mag is withdrawn. I traced it to faulty mags. The mags wern't raising the hold open swich, rather the mag follower it's self was holding open the bolt. Very "finger-pinchinglishious" if I tried to load loose rounds from the top without removing the mag. Nither the M-14 or Mini-14 should release the hold open on it's own.

Ok Then my rifle works as designed. When the fresh mag is installed the bolt stays open until I manually pull the bolt back and release it.

Thanks for all the info.

Also any idea how to efficiently remove factory oil?
