Just received my PAL/RPAL card in the mail. I want to get my first firearm and a membership at a local range. What is my first step?

I guess I should start by getting the membership at a range, then order my firearm?

I was thinking of picking up a new Beretta 92fs or S&W M&P9 or Glock 17 from Ellwood Epps or a used one from this site.

If purchasing from Ellwood Epps or another store, do I simply place the order over the phone or do I have to drive there and buy in person and present my card?

What about buying from a member of this site....what are the steps required?
How do I get a LTATT?

Thanks in advance.....I have so many questions!!

first step is take out a personal line of credit with your bank :D

club membership first, call the CFC 1-800 number and apply for a LTATT it takes about 5 minutes, without it most stores won't let you take the pistol home.

In Onterrible your club applies for the ATT for you - so that's another couple weeks wait - and most likely your club has an ATT course that you have to take.

You can buy pistols without your LTATT you just can't take them anywhere.

I've never bought from a dealer - so I can't answer your question - but I'm sure it's on the Ellwood Epps website.

Private transfers - you make the deal with the person, he/she calls in the beginning of the transfer and then gives you the transfer #. You call in and complete the transfer. Then you wait. Check the thread in Legalese for the current wait times on private transfers. Dealer transfers seem to go MUCH faster (days instead of weeks).

Welcome and congrats. :) Being in Oakville, you are not too far from a few clubs/ranges. Silverdale is highly recommended and I enjoyed my visit there but others here can fill you in on different options.

Cheers!

Yay!!!Whoooohoooo!!!

That's exactly how I feel!

Just became a member at Silverdale...signed up for my ATT course in a couple of weeks and bought a gen 4 Glock 17! Now I have to wait for the ATT course, my three supervised probationary shooting sessions...get my ATT and finally I'll be able to start having some fun! Wow...it's been close to 10 months in the making...can't wait!

NOW WHAT? I tell you WHAT - get your credit cards, line of credit, sell your house, get another personal loan, and buy lots of guns and ammo... yeeee haaaaaw ;)

oh common, i'm not being serious here. :p

Of course you're not serious... he lives in BANTARIO... there is no way he'll live long enough to acquire "Lots Of Guns" in that province.

I would seriously consider getting the club membership and the go to Target or Epps and hold a number of guns to see what feels good before you spend $600-$1000.

I KNOW!! I started all this in March of this year... the whole process seemed to take forever - but it's SO worth it. I haven't got my cert yet for my new restricted - so it was awful leaving it sitting at home when I went to the range today!! *pout*

Congrats on the Glock!! (One of those is in my future!)

One of the guys who taught my ATT course brought some of the 71 handguns he owns. He showed me the registration certificates for all of them, which he keeps in his gun box. Impressive.

Congrats nwills! Let the fun begin.

Thanks! I'm looking forward to this.

I'm still waiting on the transfer for the Glock I bought last week...a week and nothing yet! Not that it matters considering I don't have a LTATT to bring it to the range....I have weeks to wait for that as well!

What a process this has been...I understand why..but nevertheless! I'm looking forward to the day I can finally stand in front of a target at the range and start working on my accuracy! Then...on to IPSC...lol

Are you referring to the gun club's safety course for handgun section before being allowed to shoot as the club/gun range?

If not, this is the first I hear about an ATT course......

If you tough the wait game stopped after you received your license, it just start again (transfert, statt, LTATT, registration certificate) be prepared to wait 2 month ! :) enjoy Mae sure your club membership is not already expired when you receive your LTATT :p

There are ATT courses associated with most clubs. Every club I've heard of will require a handgun orientation before permitting you to use restricted's at their range &/or request an ATT. CSSA has a full ATT course similar to the PAL course except the exam is more involved. Not all the questions are multiple guess. Many require complete 5 part answers and be able to lable all the parts aof various handguns. They also have you shoot handguns in the range as part of the practical test. This course is recognised at most approved ranges and is required for a universal LTATT. In other words, it also covers ranges other than yours including the insurance verification. You still may be required to do an orientation at other clubs even with the LTATT. Otherwise, your ATT may be club specific and you would need another for going to other clubs. I just completed this course on Saturday. My ATT will allow transport to any approved range in Ontario.
