Just got this 1944 Long Branch No4 MkI* from a friend of mine. 2 groove rifling. #'s match on the receiver, bolt, magazine and fore stock. "LB's" all over the thing. It looks like a really nice one to me but I'm no expert. Anyone able to fill me in on some of the cartouches on the stock? Maybe suggest a reasonable value on it. It isn't going anywhere just curious. This is just how it came into my possetion, haven't had a chance to strip down and shorten the barrel or stock set yet.:p

Im guessing the FR is "factory repair" or something along those lines. Anyway, here are a bunch of pics.

"FR" is factory replacement. It's obviously been in the hands of the brits since it has WD broad arrows and a brass butt plate. It would be too easy to put it back to factory appearance by putting on the proper alloy butt plate. It's really sweet with the matching numbers, walnut stocked, and if you could ensure the sights are LB marked you'd be pretty much good to go. As to value? I don't know where you can find a numbers-matching Long Branch in that condition (how's the bore?) in these parts for less than $700. Maybe the Toronto connection makes the difference, but to the guy who put a $450-$500. value on it, if you ever see any good ones at that price in your travels, PLEASE let me know. I'll pay you a 10% finders fee.

Thanks Lawrence. Is there a typical place to look for the LB on the sights? The bore is really nice on this one. I was kind of skeptical on the 450-550 value as well, heck I gave my pal more than that for it.

If anyone has the correct butt plate for it, I guess I am in the market for one now.

Rear sight is indeed LB stamped. Also forgot to mention that there are 8 small notches in the top of the wood at the wrist. These are most certainly kill marks.:nest::p

Suspect the stock was changed at some time. Not really normal to see Canadian and Brit acceptance stamps on the same rifle.
The '18.5 tons' and the 'England' stamp are Brit export stamps.
Most of your nice sized pictures are too blurred to see.
Matching numbers does not guarantee the bolt head is original. Check the headspace.
