Are you sure it's an RC? It looks more like an East German rework to me. Your second pic ( are these the strange markings you were asking about? ) with the Crown and the U under it are on East German reworks. In addition, it doesn't have the X on the reciever that is common with RC's and the stock appears to be close to or an original finish. You definitely wouldn't have any matching numbers on an RC as well. Nice rifle.....

k-98 east german rework ?

i have never heard of them can you give me more info ?
thanks agian for the info

After the war, captured K98's and other German weapons were refurbished by the East Germans for use by the Volkspolizei (police). Rather than the mixmaster of parts like RC's are, most of the parts, if not all, are original to the rifle unless they needed to be replaced. They rank, in my opinion, as one of the nicest of the K98 reworks. Great shooter K98's.....

Does the stock have a 'sun' type of marking right at the bottom of the stock grip, right beside the triggerguard? It may have one on the side of the reciever as well.

Where did you buy it? I, like Steve, suspect it is not an RC. The markings are not really east German refurb markings (though an EG can have them) - they are German commercial proof marks that could well date back as far as 1939 on your rifle, but were also used on some East German reworks intended for the Police. Depended on the final destination of your rifle.

However, I have yet to see an RC with a longitudinally stamped serial number on the floorplate and a stamped matching number on the trigger guard. On an RC, these are virtually always not matching each other and are usually struck out and remarked in electropencil.

Can you post some more pics? Especially of any markings on the bolt and of the stock just behind the take-down disc on both sides.

Finally, is the safety the only part electropencilled on your rifle? If so, it's DEFINITELY an East German rework, probably done under contract for EG in Czechoslovakia.

In my opinion, it's an East German rework with some "bitster" add-ons done at different times. These East German reworks are often sometimes seen with the Czech Vz.24 front site protectosr as well, which your example doesn't have.

Here's some markings of an "all matching" (done post war), which also has been EP'd and has some more modern fonts for serial numbers (not shown in pics below).

This one was refurbished in Suhl, Germany and I believe used by the police. The markings show that the rifle had its last check in approx 1974 or later (Crown+U, Crown+N, Eagle). The crown was in use from 1952-1974 and the eagle from 1974 onwards.

Hope this helps... :)
