I live on an acreage in far north Alberta, pretty far in the sticks. My yardsite is right beside some heavy bush.
Well the dog was going nuts in the yard, you knew she was mad at something, so Mrs Riden heads out to check on her little baby and she starts yelling: "It's a bear, it's a bear"
I ran out and she said the dog was at the edge of the bush about 10 feet from the bush and the bushes moved and out came the bear. Dog kept barking at it and I figured it left. Grabbed the closest pea shooter, BLR in 308 and went to investigate. The bush is thick and it was dark too, but I went out to the edge with the dog figured mr bear was long gone. After 2 min maybe, of failing to get the dog to come with me, I could hear the bush rumble as the bear was heading out. He was maybe 10 ft from us the whole time watching us in the bush, but certainly not treed either.
I fired a warning shot to scare the buggar off. Got me wondering though, the bear came out of the bush very close to my burn barrel and when it had an easy escape route, it chose not to and stayed and I assume watched the dog and I for a while. That does not seem like typical bear behaviour to me.
Here is our protector, her name is Irish, 8 month Great Pyrenees, a lot bigger now than the pic. She is the baby of my wife and girls, but she's not that now.
