I live on an acreage in far north Alberta, pretty far in the sticks. My yardsite is right beside some heavy bush.

Well the dog was going nuts in the yard, you knew she was mad at something, so Mrs Riden heads out to check on her little baby and she starts yelling: "It's a bear, it's a bear"

I ran out and she said the dog was at the edge of the bush about 10 feet from the bush and the bushes moved and out came the bear. Dog kept barking at it and I figured it left. Grabbed the closest pea shooter, BLR in 308 and went to investigate. The bush is thick and it was dark too, but I went out to the edge with the dog figured mr bear was long gone. After 2 min maybe, of failing to get the dog to come with me, I could hear the bush rumble as the bear was heading out. He was maybe 10 ft from us the whole time watching us in the bush, but certainly not treed either.

I fired a warning shot to scare the buggar off. Got me wondering though, the bear came out of the bush very close to my burn barrel and when it had an easy escape route, it chose not to and stayed and I assume watched the dog and I for a while. That does not seem like typical bear behaviour to me.

Here is our protector, her name is Irish, 8 month Great Pyrenees, a lot bigger now than the pic. She is the baby of my wife and girls, but she's not that now.

Beautiful dog. Sounds like a good temperment for this kind of living. I live out of town as well and we've had bears in our yard several times in the last two weeks, one large black and a large grizzly. Despite calls to Renewable Resources - and a handful of rubber slugs from them, its the three labs we have that give us more peace of mind. They put the run on bears immediately, but the bears are stubborn this year and there's lots of them around, so we're a bit more watchful than normal.

Here's a photo my wife took of her young lab "Abadu" putting the run on the black bear about a week and a half ago. The photo was taken off our back porch, the bear was about 75 feet from my back door. Decent enough photo. This same bear was back several times.

The good news is now my wife is getting her PAL!

Well, I suppose shooting a grizzly would create quite a ####storm. But these are black bears, any bear that brazen can't live around me and my kids.

Last night we could hear a similar situation, around 12:30 (we were in bed) the dog was outside and wild. Mrs Riden went out on teh deck andinsisted she could hear branches cracking between barking, to be honest, I thought she was hearing things, but maybe I was wrong.

We actually call the BLR her gun. It was loaded with very girly 110 gr bullets I loaded for her to learn on, she is a long way from shooting anything yet though. Great they want to learn though.

We used to have a black lab, he was awesome at running off the bears too.

That is a good pic too.

Good looking pyr.
Ours are half siblings about 3 years apart, they work together to keep watch over the farm.
Pyrs are great livestock guardian dogs, ours have been going nuts lately at night with all the cougars, deer bears wandering around. Had a grizzly hanging around last night but have only ever had one real problem with them actually going through the fence to get at the turkeys, a sow with cubs a couple of years ago.

Here is a pic of them last summer, the younger male is the bigger one now.

Rotten Geezus bear was back again last night. We went to bed early and the Mrs took in her baby for the night. Dog woke us up at 12:30 wild, wife went to look, I was still sleeping and she said the bear was right in front of the house by the deck stairs and just lumbered away when the dog started.

She woke me up and gave me the "What kind of an idiot can sleep through that look???" I looked around and saw the bear dumped the dog dish over and saw wet paw prints on the concrete. AND the rotten bastard flipped my garbage bin in the back yard, it flipped on the door which made it even harder for the bear to open, so the garbage was intact.

I think that buggar is going down this weekend. No bear that shows that little fear is living by me.

Sounds like a problem waiting to happen, that bear.

Clearly it has no sense traipsing around in the territory of a great white polar bear like that pyr!

Good luck Riden...

In Kitimat here last yr a bear ripped up the door of a garage to get in to the garbage,
yesterday morning I found a bag of bread at the foot of the stairs leading into our house,,apparently a bear had brought his lunch as I keep all my garbage in the trailer.
LOTSA bears in town here

Well I actually hauled out my 270 WSM and left the wife's rifle alone. But I think it doesn't take much to knock down a black bear.

Good news and bad, the neighbor shot ot last night, it was eating out of h is garden right by the house. I heard the shots and the bear hollering so I went for a visit, bear was giving his family the same grief as mine.

But, he was a big un, the wife said he was big and al I thought was sure honey. She was right, I have only seen one bigger, no wonder it wasn't afraid of my dog.

No pics

I felt kinda silly asking the neighbor if I could take pics of his bear. This fella would have looked at me like I had two heads.
