I bought an SKS on Sunday night off of a co-worker.

He offered it to me for $75... I just couldn't say no. It was all matching, and the barrel is pristine. (Chinese, Factory 636, for anyone who cares)

I must say, I'm no fan of the ergonomics. The Chinese stock is ugly, and isn't all that comfortable. So I may 'upgrade' to the Tapco variant, but not before I take my new to me SKS out to the range to test it out.

Also... does anyone own some 5/20 round Tapco SKS mags? I've heard good things about them, and I'd like to give one a shot, if only for the Look Cool Factor. The looks of the fixed ten rounder and the hi-speed, low-drag stock just don't mix. :D

welcome to da club. does your friend have another for me? :D

when it comes to mag the best is the original one, yes, 20rd looks much cooler but from my experience the after market metal one are junk and the plastic are good , cant vouch for durabilty.

Just joined the club today also. My "new to me" sks arrived in the mail this morning so I ran down to the local gun store and picked up 100 rnds of ammo and ordered a case from Canadian ammo. Heading to the range in the morning to throw some lead downrange should be fun.

welcome....clean off the cosmo if it hasnt already been removed, gives you a chance to learn how the rifle was put together.

one minor note , to avoid slam fire , dismantle the bolt and clean it well (i use a q-tip), be careful to reinsert the firing pin the way you took it out (not upside down).

while on the range tomorrow, make sure your rear sight isnt all the way back but locked in at 100, all the way back is a battle range(300m). have fun and it wont break the bank :D

Had the gun apart and cleaned it. I had the bolt assembly out but didn't take the firing pin out.
Thanks for the tip on the rear sight, I just checked it and it was in the battle range setting.

no problem, just didnt want you to be shooting 6" too high.

if your firing pin dont rattle freely when you shake it then you need to clean.

I just joined the club too. I got tired of waiting for Marstar to restock so I bought one off the EE. The previous owner did not fire it. The numbers match and the cleaning kit is in the stock. Thanks to SA85M1 for letting it go to a good home. The M14S is in so I can still give Marstar my money.

Is there a cleaning kit in the stock of these things? I have a rod under the barrel, but didn't realize there were more hidden areas!

In case you didn't notice, I'm new to the SKS club as well.. LOL

Tyler, you got a better deal than I did!! LOL

Also, a good way to clean the firing pin channel without dis-assembling the bolt is to add a few drops of CLP (or solvent, or WD-40...) to the under side of the bolt. Just pull the firing pin back, add the oil, and work it back and forth for a minute and watch the dissolved cosmo come oozing out on the bolt-face.

Wipe away the goo, and repeat as necessary.
