on what the current thinking might be for a scope for my new gun...its been 25 years since I bought a scope and boy has the market 'opened' up!

I have only two scopes at present, both Leupold Vlll 1.5x5's, one on my BLR .22 and the other on my Steyr Mannlicher Luxus .270 both of which I have had as long as the scopes...25 years+.

The new gun is also a Steyr but a Classic half stock in 7mm-08. It will be used in the same mix of overgrown old cuts, and newer clear cuts, with the possibility ( if can afford it ), of a caribou hunt one of these years :).

I find the 1.5x5 gives a pretty good field of view at 1.5 but the 5 magnification doesn't work for my 'older' eyes as much as it used to. Also I sit and watch the tree line more than I used too.

My budget is something under $1,000.00, but I have to buy the bases and rings as well...so...well not sure which way to go there either.

All advise gratefully received,

Jim

Ziess has a sale on for there 3-9x conquest scope's for around $650-$700.
Vortex Viper line is also great bang for your buck.
Not a big fan of Bushnell just because of there "GREAT" customer service but then again you can never go wrong with a Leopuld.

The Zeiss I like , they are wonderful and clear. Weaver has also been gettin back out there and have quality with decent price and warranty.

Zies schmeis are to delicate to be dependable. The best optically in Leupold line is compact and no nonsense 2.5X8X36mm scope. All profesional heavy rifle builders worth their salt will recomend Leupold which will serve you worry free for the next 25 years and then some and 8 power in 7mm-08 is plenty for hunting at any distance no matter how old your eyes are.

A 2.5-8 or my preference 3.5-10 VX-3 will do you nicely.I like the B&C reticle. If you got aggressive shopping you could almost buy both of them with your $1000 price range and upgrade the old rifle as well.:)
Here's a thought; since you only buy a scope every 25 years why not pry open the ole wallet and live a little. As you know, those Steyrs are some serious iron. Why not spring for a VX-7 2.5-10? It's not like you need 10 of them, given your pattern of buying and holding.

I love spending other people's money.

I do not consider the conquest to be "delicate". I love my leupolds but the zeiss are nice. The have etched reticles and are quite robust. Bulkier scopes than comparable leupolds. I just find them much brighter than my leupolds, especially in low light. The #20 just stands out much better to my eyes than the standard duplex. I just swapped a leupold for a zeiss 3-9 on my 375 H&H for the fall,I will see how it stands up.

If you haven't had the chance to look through a Trijicon scope, do so asap. I think they are highly underrated as a hunting scope.
If not, I would go with Zeiss or Leupold.

Prophet river currently has a post on the EE for some clearance leupolds
I just bought a vx7 and saved almost 800 over local shops
they have a vx7L in 3.5-10 for 899 and that comes with rings and flip covers!!!
These are some of the best scopes on the planet!!
Looks like they only have it in German reticle.
I can't wait to get mine. After playing with one at the local ufa gunshop, I was sold on the vx7. But they have a bunch of other great deals on leupolds

another vote for the leupolds vx3 or better, very clear . Warranty if needed is never more than 2 week turn around,

Optics for my new 7-08...

Thanks for all the feedback guys, I have sent an email to Prophet River asking for available stock. We'll see what they have and go from there.

I really like the B&C reticule but there are other reticule's out there that will do the same job I guess...

Take a look at the Vortex line ;)

Well had a look at the Vortex line and searched out a few reviews on Google, looks like it is worth a try...so I got as far as putting this " Vortex Diamondback Riflescope 1 Inch 2-7x35, Style 27, Reticle DHBDC" in the shopping cart, but trying to find some rings to add to the order is proving elusive. I even tried to call the Trenton phone # but no answer.

So I'll leave the scope in the basket for now and drive to a gun shop north of here ( hour each way...), and see what they have in stock. Maybe when I get back I'll either have a set of rings and base, or there will be someone at One Shot Tac that can answer the phone...

Well the deed is done! Since time is running short I kinda had to go with what was available locally and I do like to support the neighbourhood gun dealer now and then...plus he spent a lot of time going thru all the possible weaver bases he had in stock to find a set with a profile to match the receiver on the Steyr Classic 7mm-08. Oh, they are a #47 if anyone else is ever wondering.

So the Bushnell 2.5-10x50 4200 with a standard duplex reticule went on top...secured by a set of weaver double wrap rings. Seems like a reasonably good scope, and not hard to sell if I decide to upgrade some day. The mounting system isn't as elegant as the gun but it is secure.

That will have to do for this season, by this time next year who knows what new glass I might have to try :). Thanks for all the input!

I'm on the same page as Dogleg...2.5-8x or 3.5-10x VX3 would be my choice. I'd tend toward the 2.5-8x because it's got a smaller objective which I prefer.

If you're already a Leupold guy you could go with a VX3 (improved Vari-X III) in 2.5-8, 3.5-10 or a VXII in 2-7X if you like the lower power. Also keep an eye in the EE here, there is a guy with 2 used Swarovski Z3's ones a 3-9 for 1000$ I beleive? Maybe something to ponder...
