My Story
I'm 45, and live in MTL, QC. I got into firearms via a friend who's a long-time owner and range enthusiast. I visited a range just outside of Montreal in March. We got to shoot his 9 mm pistols, and after some initial trepidation, I fully enjoyed the day. As soon as we left the range and were back in the lobby, I started to research where I could take the non-restricted CFSC in English in QuebecThe test
On April 6, 2025, I attended the CFSC. I passed the written no problem, but failed the practical by 8 points. As best I can tell, it was because I failed to eject the cartridges when a 'mock ceasefire' was called. In April , I was in Florida visiting my GF, and visited an indoor range as well as outdoor trap facility and got lots of practice with the ACTS & PROVE process which is essential to passing the CFSC. I re-took JUST the practical last weekend, and passedIf you're fixing to take the CFSC, you might find the 'hands-on' time in the classroom isn't enough to be comfortable with what's required for the 1 on 1 practical that's done at the end of the course , that was my scenario. The time I had on the range with the pistol with my friend wasn't very useful for what the teacher wanted from me on the practical. If you have a friend who owns a bolt action rifle or shotgun, ask them to take you to the range to practice ACTS & PROVE. Or, get a USA partner and practice down there

What's next
As pistols and most semi-auto rifles are now banned, my plan is to buy one shotgun for trap shooting, and one bolt or semi-auto 22 LR for the range.I'm a glass half full guy, I'm aware that the noose is tightening for legal firearms owners in Canada, but I'm still excited to have this as a hobby for this year
