Hi, I've recently acquired a SKS-D (my first rifle :dancingbanana: ) and i'm kind of new to milsurps. The dealer who sold me the SKS told me to clean the rifle thoughouly but i haven't the faintest clue on where to start.

Anyone have any tips or advice for cleaning the SKS ? It looks like it had been packed in cosmoline.

Go into the milsurp forum, from where you have just started this thread. Up at the top, there is a dedicated SKS forum. You should find everything you need to know in there. Thank me later:dancingbanana:

Enjoy your SKS, they're great!

wow.. lol I need to use the "search this forum" function more... beats the regular search anyday ! haha

I'm anxious to start my cleaning and get to shooting ! :D

Oh yea, one question about the wood stock. If I went the refinishing route, what kind of oil/stain would I have to use to refinish it? I don't know anything about wood working.

Not to be picky, but an SKS-D isn't a milsurp rifle. It is a military style rifle made specifically for commercial sale. These were not made for, or used by, military forces.
You can strip and sand the stock with supplies from your local hardware store. Use a chemical stripper, then sand through 320 grit. Remove as many metal parts from the stock as you can, of course. Apply whatever tint of stain that suits your fancy, finish with a matte, semi gloss, or gloss urethane varnish as you desire.

Good site

hmm but my serial number is in the 1.6 million range... isn't it a surplus rifle ? or am I confuzing the norinco repros with the surplus (hence my mentioning of SKS-D)

thanks for advice on wood finishing though !

Just one thing about SKS's . Most ammo is corrosive primed. While the bore may be chromed, THE GAS CYLINDER IS NOT Make sure you give that a clean too, each time you shoot it.;)

It started life as a regular SKS, but the "D" conversion was done by norinco for the commercial market. They were never issued or sold or used by any military, strictly made for commercial export.

SKS rifles were widely used by the PLA. The PLA did not use D versions. The D was created for the commercial market.

the so call para/cowboy was also made for commercial use, its the one with a short barrel , did any get imported into canada?

They would be restricted here, so the market would be quite small, compared with standard SKS rifles. Never seen one, doesn't mean that there aren't any around.

Your "D' might have started off as an issued rifle in original form, but as mentioned by others was certainly converted later for the commercial market.

Then again it is China, so who knows were your SKS has been. :D
