Ahhh screw the game, I paid $100 at Westrifle for the one with the worst finish (in conclusion that the rest would be better based on the picture). I sanded it all down and gave it 3 coats of Minwax Stain&Poly in one. The can of stain/poly plus the sandpaper (bought 300 and 150) and the applicator pads came out to $30 bucks, so $150 for a nice Mosin (shipping).

Very nice results!!! You give me some good ideas for the Easter week-end...!
What color did you use in the company chart : Royal walnut, Mission Oak, Tudor ???
Rona or Réno-Dépôt hardware stores stuff? Thanks!

Looks very nice. You've achieved a nice satin finish.

I'm doing something similar with a worn and beat 44 Tula ex-sniper. I went for a redish color which started as straight cherry stain, mixed with 21 shots of red. On mine, I didn't sand, just used Circa 1850 which removed just the shellac and left the petina. But I'm staining and finishing separately, using Tru-Oil for the finish.

Something that worked well for me was steam cleaning the stock after stripping. I just used a wet cloth and hot clothes iron to steam the wood. It pulled out a lot of gunk from the pore of the wood that the stripper couldn't touch. No need to sand.
