Just sent in my application for a restricted PAL

After visiting my family doctor, who delivered me eighteen years ago, for my second reference I went to the post office with my form, certificates from both the CFSC and CRFSC, a Canada Post money order for eighty dollars, the official envelope, and my photo. At the post office I signed the end of the form and inquired about sending the documents by registered mail. The postal clerk was very friendly and recommended that I send the documents in a larger Canada Post envelope via their Priority Courier service. Initially, I was a bit apprehensive about not using the official envelope, but it didn't look like all of the documents would fit in such a tiny envelope anyway. I ended up following his advice. They won't really care which envelope I use, right?

PS. Is there a reason why the Central Processing Suite is in Miramichi? Apparently, it takes three whole days to get something there from Vancouver via Priority Courier compared to overnight delivery for other larger destinations. Isn't this just a big inconvenience for everyone?

When I did mine, I put everything in the envelope I got from my instructor, sealed it, then put that envelope inside the Xpress post envelope, filled out the label and sent it off.

I sent mine regular mail, sent on Tue, the processed it the following Monday

If you are upgrading from a PAL the $80 fee is waived, they will cash that money order as well as cheques, but VISA, MC they will just void.

There's an official envelope? For my PAL application in 07, and again for my RPAL last year, I downloaded the forms off the CFC website and stuffed it all in to a regular business sized envelope and then stuffed that in to an Express Post envelope.

Worked for them then, oughta work now.

Gathered everything together, made copies of everything and sent it express post today.
At least I can follow it on line and they have to sign for it.

Just a reminder, Full cost of license is $80. If you have your PAL which cost you $60 and then apply for your RPAL separately, it costs $20 more for your RPAL to total $80 for total license. This is what my instructor put on my paperwork and told me I had to pay.

I would suggest joinging a gun club now, and get your manatory of probation shoots out of the way, borrow sdomeone elses gun. makes things go faster when your PAL comes in.

If you are an existing PAL holder, there should be no fee to upgrade to RPAL.

Here is how it goes:

The total cost for a firearms license is $80

If you apply for both PAL and RPAL at the same time, cost is $80

If you apply for just your PAL, cost is $60

If while your PAL is still active and you apply for your RPAL, cost is $20.

$60 + $20= $80

If you send in your application with no fee attached, you will get it back in the mail and delay your application. No if's, and's, or but's....

If you question this info, call CFC yourself.

Wrong, I have my PAL, wrote my RPAL then sent in all my info,.. They never charged me anything,.. as when I CALLED THE CFC they said the fee is WAIVED. So your call theory doesn't mean anything, if you send in a cheque or money order they are required to cash it, if you use CC it is voided,.. But until May 2009 there is no fee to upgrade to RPAL.

Right from the FAQ on the Firearms site

Q. I recently received a cheque from you. Why did you send it to me? Does it affect the status of my firearms licence or registration certificate?

Our most common reason for issuing a cheque to someone is to reimburse the fee for renewing or upgrading a firearms licence. The fee to renew or modify a licence issued under the Firearms Act is waived until May 16, 2009.

It is also possible that the cheque was sent to reimburse you for an overpayment for something you applied for under the Firearms Act.

This payment does not affect the status of your licence or registration certificate. The privileges shown on the back of your licence will remain valid until your licence expires or is revoked. Your registration certificates remain valid unless your licence expires or is revoked, you alter the firearm in a way that will change its description (for example if you alter the calibre or gauge), or you sell or give the firearm to someone else.

There is no fee for upgrading from a PAL to RPAL, until the above mentioned date.

Well, I read that before, but that is not you are told when you call. That is not what the Instructor told us and instructed the class to do. He said if you did not send it, you would get your application back in the mail.

Your choice, do as you see fit.
