I am just starting out and was wondering if anyone could give me any suggestions on a good target pistol. I have been looking at S&W 22A. $500 is about my price limit.

I have a Ruger MKII and really like it. I paid $350 new. I can shoot almost as well with it at 25m as with an open sighted rifle standing. They are also very well made and parts/accessories are everywhere.

Ruger Mk II rocks and there is almost always one for sale in the EE forum at any given moment in time.....I cannot remember the last time I had a stoppage with mine, and I've shot close to 2000rds through it this year.....ultra reliable, and it way accurate for what I need too....

3X for the ruger

Got a bull bbl one and love it.

If you get one you may want to look into a mag loader for them as well.
You can make your own loader by cutting a hole in a kids building block.

The Mark II or the Ruger 22/45 are great start pistols. But don't forget the Single Six either. They can be found with target sites, and you do have the option of using either .22rf or .22 winmag. You might also find a used S&W 617 in your price range.

A friend of mine has a Walther P22. Nice little gun but it is a little too small for my hands. It was still easy to shoot though. It seemed fairly accurate but he said it is very picky on ammo. Light ot cheap loads work poorly in it.

No experience with much other than my grandfathers 1911 Colt. It was a police or military practice gun of some sort in 22lr. Uncle has it now. Lots of years since I shot it but I remember it was heavy but very accurate. No idea what it is worth though.

I was goining to mention the P22. I looked at them myself. The Walther P22 is a nice little gun, and it does have the changeable backstrap.

But older versions can get into a non-firable, non-user serviceable condition that takes a trip to the factory to repair. Don't know if newer version still have this fault....but anything in his price range is going to be used and/or the older model.

I went with the Ruger 22/45 mrk II myself.

Walther P22

I have a walther P22 (newer one) that I bought a year ago. It shoots anything but hypervelocity and the shotshell rounds (PM if you want details).
As for the feeding issues, the new magazines do not have the problem (there is an "A" at the end of the part number) and the new pistol series shoots great (think mine is an H series.... double check later).

I have placed over 10K rounds through it without doing a detail clean and it is just starting to show some wear.

PM me if you have any questions about the P22.

as much as i like the ruger it is a complete pain in the arse to clean. a fantastic quality 22 semi in my opinion would be a high standard supermatic. extremely easy to clean, good weight to it and deadly accurate. retains it's value too.

Ochiix,

I agree that the new ones may be better, but the older ones suffered from a permanent lockup condition. Occured if you used the integral key lock and moved the hammer to half-####. The pistol would lock up and need to be returned to the factory for repair. See http://www.rimfirecentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=40667 for details

That, and the slipping safety issue were two reasons why I didn't buy a used one.

Sounds like they do have the bugs worked out. 10K rounds is nothing to sneeze at.

I have one of those babies. It is a sport shooters professional weapon of choice. made by Baikal. They are on special for $500. Great balance and handling highly recomended.

I've got a HS Victor & a S&W '41 (both old, used when purchased) -> they're each excellent shooters although somewhat ammo sensitive. My own research prior to buying a .22 LR pistols put these two models in my 'top 3', along wiht the Ruger MK II mentioned above. All pricey new, but lots of used stuff available that won't break the bank. I have not heard great things about the newer S&W rimfires ...

added: I've also fired the Baikal IZH-35 above (club gun) -> as close as you can get to a real competition pistol for <$1000 -> 5 round mag cap, and not suitable for 'field' use (not that we care about that in Canada...)
