It was depressing shooting 4 minute rifles, so I dug out a couple that I expected better results from.
First up was my new K-31. This was the first time I shot it. I bought a set of Lee dies and 100 pieces of Privi brass and loaded some ammo to get a feel for load and to zero it. I used a Swiss sidemount and a old scope so I would not have to use the open sights. The scope is slightly offset to the right, but still quite comfortable to use.
I used a non-cannister 4895 (it is slow) and some Lapua 155gr match bullets. I tried an initial survey of 45, 46, 47 & 48 gr. I shot 5 round groups, and alternated with another rifle, so the barrel was warm, but not too hot. It seems to like 46 gr and the group opened up at 48 gr. 100 yards, off the bench.
K-31 is a joy to shoot! Excellent trigger and very good accuracy. I look forward to shooting this in a Vintage Rifle match.
My Mosin Nagant sniper is a clone. I massaged the trigger a bit and bedded it. Accuracy is very good for a milsurp.
First I tried some Russian 147 milsurp ammo;
Then I tried the same ammo, but with the powder charged reduced by 2 grains. I was hoping to make a load as accurate as the factory ammo, but a bit milder. The M44 hurts with full power ammo. Accuracy got worse.
Then I made some mexican match. i pulled the military bullet and reduced the powder charge from 48.5 gr to 45 gr and loaded a Sierra 174 MatchKing. This shot better:
