I bought a Russian capture K-98 a couple weeks ago and as you can expect the stock is a little more than lightly beaten up. Since then I've come across some replacement stocks on Marstar and am now seriously considering picking one up. I gave them a call and the guy on the phone assured me that they are not RC stocks and that they're in pretty good shape, but it would put my mind at ease to see a few pictures for myself. Has anyone else bought one of these stocks? And if so can you post pics please? Thanks :)

I'm not sure about the stocks themselves, but...

Do you really need a new stock? A few dings and scratches are normal with RCs. You won't make the rifle better than it already is. Why not buy $150 worth of 8mm mauser instead?

I agree. The scratches and dings just add character. If that rifle could talk, imagine the stories it would tell.

That's part of the appeal of a RC k98, it's seen battle and has history. I'd just leave it as is and look for a nice condition Mauser if that's what you want.

Short answer. Do I need another stock? No. Would I buy another stock? Sure, why not.

I totally agree that the original stock is part of the rifle's history, and I plan to keep it safely in storage, but I don't want flakes of dried shellac sticking to me every time I go to shoot it. Besides, I got the rifle for a good price so I'm ok with paying for another stock if it means the rifle will look closer to its original condition and not cause a mess every time I go to shoot it.

Probably stripped from K98's that had serious issues due to the fact that they only have limited numbers. If they have a serial number perpendicular to the bore on the left side of the butt they are probably Yugo. If they say the recoil lug is sound and there are no cracks I would buy one for a RC if you want to spruce it up a little. You will pay a lot more for a Norwegian capture stock and they are getting hard to find.

Thanks, good to know. I may give them a call and double check.

To bad they only show the right side of the stock. I picked one up from them a few years ago after giving them a call to see if they had anything on hand. They had one only and it was a Yugo take off. Very nice condition though. The black butt cups are indicative of the Yugos and some Czech FTRs

Where purchasing a stock is really advantatious is when you find a nice rifle that has been sporterized. Or if you need to modify a stock for an RC Sniper (ZF41) you can keep the original RC Stock and notch out a second stock.

You never know when you might find a really nice barreled receiver that could use a restoration.

Thanks for the help guys. I went ahead and ordered one of the stocks in laminate. It just came in last week and I put it on my rifle last night. I've gotta say, I am very pleased with the stock they sent me. In my opinion, it looks and feels much better than my original RC stock. It's got German markings on it still and you can see the "H" on the butt of the rifle, just like on my old stock. I'll post some pics of the old and new stock when I get a chance though, in case anyone is on the fence and want to see what Marstar is offering.

I just got my stock in the mail, and it actually looks very nice. The numbers all match on the hardware and inside the stock. There's no serial number stamped on the side of the butt. I ordered one because the stock on my Yugo mauser made the action sit at a weird angle. I asked if they could find me a dark coloured stock with a cupped buttplate, so naturally I received a light coloured stock with a flat buttplate, but I'm happy with the fit and finish of it.
