My brother bought a k11 1912 (not the carbine, the longer version) form CT last year, and yesterday as he was cleaning it, he decided to remove the but plate. There was a white piece of paper with the owners name on it (pics below). On the back of the paper was the serial number of the rifle. I thought it was pretty neat, so I think I'm going to buy either a k11 or k31 next time I head out to Canadian tire, for $289 you can't go wrong. Anyone else have a name tag under there k11 or k31 but plate? From what I see on Google, they are pretty common.

I converted the message under the stock:

Leo Haas, 1902

Aviation Support Company No. 3

Zwingen, Switzerland

Yes, it is quite common. I have checked on of my K31's and it had a tag, haven't checked my other Swiss rifles yet.

Very nice, every infantry rifle I have encountered has not had the name tag, well most carbines tend to.

For the record, the official designation would be either G11 standing for Gewehr 1911 (Gewehr meaning rifle, the K in K11 means Karabiner meaning carbine) or I.G. 11 which would be Infantry Gewehr 1911.

Here are some photos of the ones I have had

These two photos are of my oldest nametag, from a K11 dated 1914.
Issued to a Ruegg Alois, Detachment 32, not sure what the rest says. His address is on the back

This one was from a K11 dated 1927
Issued to Huber, Max born 1909,
He was a Fusilier in the third company 277 battalion
And it just has his address afterwards

This is from my K31, dated 1954.
Issued to Frank Schneider born 1936,
Home Defense Company (for soldiers over the age of 46)
3rd company 26 battalion

My K31 has the tag, but all it has is the name of the person and the rifle s/n. Does this mean it was civilian? The stock is in the typical beat-up condition however.

Are these rifles a good buy in terms of being a plinker ?
Do most have a good bore and are in shootable condition ?
I'm asking all these questions because I have yet to see any at our local CTs or WSS stores and I would probably be all over one if it were in good shape..

Are these rifles a good buy in terms of being a plinker ?

If you like plinking with a cartridge that is much nearer to a .30-06 than a .308Win, then you'll love plinking with a Swiss long arm of any kind and the world's best military surplus ammunition, GP11. Like many of us who shoot Swiss, I 'plink' out to 900m with mine.

Do most have a good bore and are in shootable condition ?

Most of them have a bore that looks like new, due to the Swiss cleaning régime using grease instead of oil, while the gun is still warm from the last shot. All of mine look like new down the barrel - the oldest is 1914 and the newest 1954. TBH, I've never ever encountered what you might call a marginal bore, but then I've only been shooting Swiss since 1964.

Thanks for your input Tacfoley, I will start looking and checking prices because I saw one advertised for about $ 600 with extras.
Judging by your years of experience with one I'm guessing that we are close in age.... again Thanks.

Could be. I was in Switzerland on a school vacation, and spent my spare time on the local village range whenever I could. $600 seems to be a lot on $$$ to me, depending on what YOU call accessories.

Do tell.

My mistake and I apologize it was a K 31 rather than a K11.... now for someone ( me ) who does not know is there a significant difference between the two aside from age ?

600$ is a lot for a K31 unless it had a bunch of ammo or something. Usually they sell in the 300-400$ area.

For the difference between a K31 and K11 there are quite a few. They are both the same length however, the K31 has a much longer sight radius and it starts at a more reasonable range (100m on the K31 vs 300m on the K11). The actions are also completely different (the K31 no longer being a Schmidt rubin so it has a very compact bolt).

Later this month or earlier next year I will make a post showing the differences between the different models as time progressed.

All the answers you could ever think of asking about anything Swiss can be found on www.swissrifles.com Youtube is awash with movies showing the differences - Iraqveteran has some good stuff and so does hickock45. tac's guns also has a couple of posts, but the things are just so popular that I've lost count of them.

PS - there is, as far as I know, NO library of tags.
