"Thanks to Hans Maag of the Swiss IGW(Interessengemeinschaft Geschichte und Waffe / Interest society history and guns) some figures of a 2002 investigation.
Some 974.300 ex Swiss army guns are expected to be in private hands of which 10-15% are in the hands of the estimated 39.000 Swiss gun collectors and according to the SSV a number of some 600.000 are with the 300.000 Swiss shooters (the average shooter owns two ex army guns), the rest is spread under the population.
Of the 185.000 1911 rifles some estimated 150.000 are in private hands, for the K11 that is 27.000 and 15.000, for the K31 that is 543.000 and 400.000 (plus some 10.000 private rifles).
The K31 numbers correspond with a 1997 Swiss press release in which is stated that some 136.000 K31's were still in stock with the Swiss arsenals see...
p082.ezboard.com/A-1997-S...=133.topic
Over the past years these rifles were sold worldwide as surplus through RUAG and the military arsenals are out of K31's now.
Conclusion is that the only remaining sources for K31's in Switzerland are private persons, collectors and gundealers that buy these from private persons.
The good thing is that the average quality of rifles exported to the USA shall be better, the bad thing is that the prices will be higher.
