Quick question, I have heard many say the PPU ammo is adequate, but I have not heard much feedback on the hornady ammo available.

Anybody with any experience?

(yes i know, reload, but for the price of a reloading set I can buy a few decades worth of hunting ammo, not to mention time commitment etc.)

Is there a source for the Hornady ammo around here? I know Can Tire on Leila has the Prvi, about $28 or $29. I use the FMJ ($22) and I really like it.

The one time I ever saw Hornady SP stuff it was priced at a heart-stopping $180/C.

AFAIK the vendor hadn't sold any at all, mainly because nobody here shoots anything but paper with their Swiss schtuff.

There is no doubt of its efficacy as a hunting round, though, as many reloaders use it for everything on four legs in the lower 48 - it packs a certain degree of authority with a 174gr bullet at around 2600 fps.

Just pull the FMJ bullet from GP11 ammo and replace with a good .308 hunting bullet like this one - .308 Hornady 178gr A-Max Boat Tail -

It's a pound heavier that the No4, but an inch shorter. The same weight bullet has a m/v around 300 fps faster than the .303British and an action that does not rely on cranking a bolt around a bunch of angles if you need a second fast shot. You can fit an effective muzzle brake - easily removed if necessary - to soften the recoil around one third. Ever put a muzzle brake on a Lee-Enfield?

But, hey, don't expect an unbiased POV from e, I've been shooting a K31 since 1964.

OK. Just my opinion. However, a No.4 sporter for instance, would be about 1/3 less weight, 10 rd. detachable magazine, even better sights, and hits plenty hard enough to have killed more game in Canada than probably all other calibers combined.
And the straight-pull still can't touch an Enfield as far as speed, as per the mad minute.

Hunters lugged around these type of rifles for years because it's what they had. (Enfield, K31 et all).

We must be pussies with our ATV's or something.

Don't get me wrong, I love light compact hunting rifles (have a few of em) but we really have become pansies.

Why not use a K31 for hunting ? mkrnel's "mexican match" suggestion would work just fine. Work a bunch up, confirm your hits, dig up your boots and hit the trail. I'd use a K31 no problem...... it WAS originally made for "hunting" ;)

True, but that's exactly why you see so many Enfied, Mauser, Springfield, Krag, etc. sporters.
Knock off a pound or two, get rid of bayonet lugs, barrel bands, handguards etc. makes it lighter and handier for sure.
