I recently inherited a K98 and a AG M/42B rifle.
The K98 appears to be all original, has a sling and bayonet. Its dated 1941. The #s on the outside appear to to be the same, ie the stock and bolt and receiver etc. The gentleman that owned it mounted a leopold scope on the top of it but that seems to be the only modification. This site talks about k98s having matching serial #s. Do I have to take this gun apart somehow to check for further #s or can I assume if the outer #s are the same, that the rest of them are the same. If they are the same, can somebody give me an idea what I should list as a price as I have no wish to keep it.
As for the M42b, I have two magazines with it, the bayonet, scabbard and leather belt holder as well as a cleaning kit with it. The date on it is 1943. The #s on it appear to match as well. Same questions for it, should I take it apart to check for matching #s or is this important and what should I be asking for it as well?

Any help would be appreciated. If pics would help, please pm and I will forward pics to your email address. Not sure of how to post pics on this forum.

Thanks
Andrew

Nothing worse than a $2500 rifle being drilled into a $400 rifle :( :( :(

The horror! A genuine matching numbers K98k is worth a fair bit from $1200 to $3000 depending on condition if it is in original condition. Many were refurbed after the war in East Germany, Yugoslavia, USSR etc. and renumbered then or "force matched". Unfortunately someone drillng and tapping holes in the receiver ruins the value to Mauser collectors. Not that it is worthless if a genuine matching rifle but it has probably lost 75% of its value. Don't bother tearing down the rifles to examine them. Someone unfamiliar with them may damage them further by doing so.

if you want a real idea, post pictures of decent quality. with as many serial numbers as you can see ,especially the top of the bolt.

Welcome aboard. Most of your answers can be found through reading previous posts, but I am enthusiastic about the Swede's!

My first gun ever...had mine 25 years. In good condition, they seem to be selling at about 300. Add $'s for the cleaning kit (or PM me to sell it separate), and more for the bayo (they will also fit the '96).

The extra magazine is worth about 100 bucks (more to the right purchaser)! Magazines are tricky to come by. They were issued one per rifle, and meant to be loaded from chargers/strippers.

These are possibly the most accurate semi 'surp ever. Uses the time-tested 6.5x55 round. Unique direct gas system. Very accurate, LOUD, and can launch brass 20feet away. Quite easy to field strip (There is an awesome sticky on them http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?777762-The-AG42-rifle-egyptian-Hakim-amp-Rasheed ). Be very careful in handling it, as the unique action does have the potential to eat a finger. Not a serious concern if you familiarize yourself with it's operation.

Very under appreciated rifles.
