hey there, yesterday my dad was at the canadian tire in Bellville and they had a russian capture k98. after my dad took he look he noticed the scope base built into the rear sight. once he got home we researched it for a bit and decided we should buy it. I made the hour drive to Bellville from whitby today and I picked it up. I think I will need a new stock, as well as a zf41 scope and mount, most likely a repo set unless i can find a original scope. numbers match as shes a russian capture. I would like to try an find a correct stock for this ar42 coded k98. after I removed the russian shellac I found all kinds of stamps waa63 is stamped multiple times in different places on the wood. the cutout for the scope base looks sloppy so it was likely done by the russians.

any advice on which parts need to be changed for it to be more correct.

great rifle…I am in Ajax… How much was Canadian Tire selling the k98 ? Do they have any other milserps ? Thanks

Nice find! ar 42 K98k's are pretty hard to find even in RC form and especially with a zf-41 mount.

The stock, as you know, isn't correct. The zf-41 cutout isn't even close plus it's off an early Mauser Oberndorf and would never have had a zf-41 on it originally so probably Russian modified to fit the barreled action.

Correct zf-41 stocks are out there but they're going to be expensive and hard to find. You'd want to find a flat buttplate one with most likely no external markings other than a serial. From what I can see this would be most "correct" for an ar42 zf-41 rifle.

Personally, I would just leave it the way it is. The whole rifle is a m/m of parts with the only original matching components being the barrel/receiver. To me the RC part of it is now part of it's history and I think it's a great rifle the way it is. I would add a repro scope to it to complete the look but I wouldn't bother changing out any parts.

Nice! Good find, I would live to come across something like that.

Solid advice.

there is enough wood there,to have it properly inleted ,for the scope mount base. send me a pm and I can send you some pictures.

I would agree.
You can sometimes find an original mount/scope/can anywhere from $600-1500 on Ebay. I have one of these 'ar' RC zf41 snipers but mine was not cut out by the Soviets. If anything you could work on that cut-out.
Original ZF41 stocks start at $400 and go from there and most will be Norge Captures.
Repro scopes/mounts cost about $500
You want a set of tools ($50) if you plan to zero the rifle, the tools work on repro and original scopes.
Neat rifle!!!

On the back side of the zf41 can, are there 3 rivets there on the bigger upper metal piece that attaches the wide canvas belt to the can?

Are the rivets there or are they painted over? Why was the can painted over?

The "AF 4378" looks like it was stamped yesterday.

There are new made and very convincing fake zf41 cans out there made in France.

Cxn are a legit maker but there are cxn postwar and fake as well. Any other zf scope would have been better, this one will require research regarding its serial number to determine when and where it was made.

Honestly hard to say from the blurry pics.

CXN is the most common maker and un-finished parts and mounts were assembeld into completed scope sets post war and there are also high quality european fakes often marked CXN. I might go with a different maker for that reason. Optics are often foggy and it is hard to get someone in Canada to refurb or clean one of these scopes - so clarity is a concern as already noted.

The European reproduction cans are very, very good and many dealers sell aged copies as originals unknowingly. There are alos dubious people out there that misrepresent these repro cans as well. Nevertheless reproduction cans still sell advertised as reproductions for $200-350.

Darrin Weaver who wrote Hitlers Garands also studied German Commercial markings. As previously mentioned there are a few ways to tell a fake scope can. First - is it just isn't aged right, Second - The rivets are wrong - Third and this is the best is look at the securing latch. There should be a commercial symbol stamped on the latch. Repros have this same symbol but within the bottom of the symbol they forgot a small 'u'. So the only way this is currently being faked is a latch from a damaged can - could be added to a repro can. But as far as I know, none of the reproduction companies have added this missing 'u' hidden within the commercial stamp. Simply a lack of attention to detail.

Scope looks legit especially as it was milled in order to update the model of scope during a WWII update/refurb. Someone could fake this but why? And would it be worth the work?

Mount looks legit from the pics. Could use more pics however.

Missing the rear rain shield, these can be replaced with real or fake ones and may indicate it is legit as if fake why not have both two shields???
