I have a Czech K98 in 7.62 but it has been painted with a layer of primer then black paint.

Its black paint is probably a automotive paint.

How do I remove the paint?

What can I use to remove the paint in a test spot before trying it on a visible spot?

Are you trying to preserve the original finish underneath? That's going to be difficult to say the least.

If you just want to strip it, get a chemical stripper and do not sand it.

I would try Varsol. soak the metal parts. the wood, brush it on with a cheap paintbrush, and wipe off with a rag. Do it outside the fumes will stink out the house.

I have used Circa 1850 Furniture Stripper, just need a thin coat. It removes paint/dried oils and dried grease. It will not affect the bluing at all. Rinse with "Hot" water and dry/oil up after.

Take it apart completely. Smaller parts can be submerged in the mineral spirits. Leave them in for couple of hours. Remove and wipe off, brush off (no steel brush) the existing finish. For the barreled action you can use chemical stripper or wrap everything in the paper towels, soak them with mineral spirits (just plug the bore first) and wrap everything in the aluminum foil. Leave it for couple of hours and wipe or brush off the paint (again no steel brush). Varsol has less intense smell than some other brands. Good luck.
