So folks. Acquired a K98 mix and match. Nothing matches, but so far the main issue appears to be the bolt - safety doesn't work/engage and has been fiddled with, and firing pin protrudes way too far. I suspect they're the same issue... likely to do with the firing pin being wrong.
Looking online I see the standard spec for pin protrusion is .060" +/-.005"
I've checked the pin protrusion and in the fully assembled bolt the firing pin protrusion is 0.085". If I disassemble the bolt and just place the firing pin in the bolt I get .111" protrusion, however without any information or an on-spec bolt I can't confirm if over-protrusion is normal with a disassembled bolt is normal or an indicator of other issues.
So, anyone got any input on options here? I don't have a new firing pin to check against, or an on-spec K98 to compare to. I suspect my protrusion is too far out of spec and that in fact it's not a correct firing pin, but I'm not sure.
Edit - I do have a spare sleeve, safety and cocking piece and the bolt behaves the same with them. I've swapped out all three, and individual pieces, all with the same results - what I believe to be excessive protrusion and both safeties not working, so I suspect the firing pin.
