K98 firing pin questions

Does anyone know if you can adjust how much the firing pin comes out of the bolt? Recently my friend and I took the bolt apart and cleaned it. Then we packed it with grease. Now I'm shooting Igman ammuntion from Districorp. I had some FTF and I noticed that the indent in the primer is much smaller as opposed to the round I have been shooting before I took the bolt apart.

I'm thinking either

a) I assembled the bolt incorrectly and the pin is not far enough from the bolt face then struck by the hammer.


b) packed too much grease and the pin has no room to move forward to hit the primer.

The indent left in the primer is much smalled than before.

You diagnosed your own problem.
Get rid of the grease, it's not a wheel bearing that you're packing! Be glad it wasn't a semi auto rifle-Kaboom. It would have fired out of battery, or multiple shots.

Run the K98 dry and see what happens. Always use oil very, very sparingly.
 
Ok My firend took the bolt apart and cleaned all of the grease. The pin protrusion haven't changed much. Is the firing pin adjustable? I'm going to post pic of the primers in a day or two.
 
Are you certain its the correct firing pin for the rifle? I have never run into this except when I got a 95 Mauser from someone on this forum that had a #### on opening kit installed , and Protrusion had not been addressed:eek: , a dangerous situation for a 95 that does not handle gases like the 98.
Oh, just a plug for Wolf springs, if you happen to need a good spring for a 98 they make a dandy.

I'm pretty sure its the correct spring. The thing is that before I took the bolt apart it was firing no problem (the primer had a nice big indent) now albeit with different ammo Igman the indent in the primer is much smaller.
 
A change in the appearance of the primer probably just means that the primer cups are different. The more recent ones could be harder. Another reason not to have a lot of lube in the bolt is that in the event of a ruptured primer, the crap is going to get blown out backwards. Have you measured firing pin protrusion? If protrusion is OK, then perhaps a new spring would be a good idea. A new spring might be a good idea anyway, and would do no harm.
 
The firing pin isn't adjustable.

Firing pin protrusion should be .050-.055".

I bought my last Wolf spring from Lever Arms in Vancouver.

Are you sure? Just got out a 98 bolt - there is only one correct way the bolt shroud will assemble to the bolt body, only one way the firing pin engages the cocking piece, and the front face of the cocking piece making contact with the inner shoulder of the bolt shroud is what stops foreward motion of the striker asembly. I don't think that there is any way of adjusting firing pin protrusion, other that by altering parts.
 
Just got back from the range. The problem was grease inside the bolt. I cleaned the grease out applied a light coat of oil and tried it. No more FTF's
