Just picked up my first German Mauser, and I can't stand the sights. I wear glasses for distance, and my rear sight it always a little blurry, but forgot about it with those k98 sights. The best military sight for me is my No4 Mk1, but I'm good with my Mosin too.

Anyone else have this much trouble with the k98?

Mauser military sights have never been regarded highly for shooting by most. They are very fine and hard to see in low light. Once you get used to them you should be able to do decent shooting.

Ya themauser sights are terrible. I would think they ar the most impotant part of a rifle, but they dropped the ball in Germany.

Rear sight should be blurry. I quite like the sights on a K98.

Same here. Although, low light does suck. I find it quicker than Mosin sights as I tend to spend a second shifting my eye to even out the sight picture. The 'V' shaped notches are far quicker to align... And I have astigmatism.

I found I got a better sight picture with the front hood off, if there is one. But overall theyre not the best. Restored mine back to Iron sights and jeez even mosin ones are much clearer. Im not sure if a wider u one be better then a V notch one.

Your age and whether you have progressive lenses in your glasses will make it worse.

The younger you are the better regarding eyes and iron sights.

Spoken like the truly uninformed.
They didn't drop the ball in Germany. Early lee enfields were the same. Mosins, 1903, svt, the list goes on and on. Its just an earlier type of sight.

Never thought much about it. So that makes me wonder how they compare to the smle sights. my first gun I bought was a mauser 98k and never could hit much with it (liked the rifle hated the sights). Sold it years ago. I have an smle and a number of mosins and shoot fine with them. I always thought better glasses and practice made the difference. Could have been the sights.??

not quite. I found the mosin were much clearer. Only because the mosin u notch is much bigger.

They're like any other tangeant sight of the period and better than some. The 1903 sights were intricate, and finer, (don't get me wrong I love my 03) but they are target type sights. The M91 sights are even harder to aquire. I find the mauser has great combat accuracy, and I can align them quicker than the other tangeant types I own, close to as fast as aperture sights when I'm shooting.

Sights like this are better if they are further away. I totally agree that open notch type sights are terrible, same goes for all of them including the K31. This is why the Swiss came up with target sights that clamp on to a K31. During WWII the only countries that figured this out was UK and USA and did an aperture in the rear. To make the open notch more visable you need to play with your shooting glasses prescription and even try the glasses you use for pistol to focus on the front. An iris aperture that sticks to your glasses will also help. Of course I am talking about older eyes here that can't focus. If you are in your twenties this will probably not be an issue.

To experiment with different prescriptions based on the rx from your eye guy I have used Eye Buy Direct to create some different things to try, very inexpensive. My latest creation is a right lens for pistol front and the left for distance, still to actually shoot with it but the glasses look really well made for the money, about $45 delivered. I will order more from them when I want to try different things.

Could be because the Mosin is a big wider, that the K98 is fine my astigmatism is effecting it.

K98 V Notch, On top is a M38 rear sight ( more bigger U ) No1MKII Rear Sight Right ( much larger then both )

I think I will get the hang of it. I know that the rear sight should be a little blurry, but I have a really hard time lining up the rear and front sight.
I don't mind my mosin, swede, or k31.
