Hi everyone...

So... I have a nice K98 that shoots incredibly high... I was shooting it today... knowing it would be high... so I aimed 12" low at 100 yds... still shooting 6" high... so 18" high in total...

Does anyone know where I can get a front sight blade that's extra high to compensate? The rear sight is as low as it will go...

I have the exact issue with the K98 I recently acquired. At 20 yards it shoots at least 8 to 10 inches high. A buddy of mine has the same issue with a K98 he recently bought as well. I'm wondering if this is a charactaristic of a "batch" of K98's being sold right now on the market?
Anyone else had this problem?

Also, does anyone, like the poster asked, have a good source for frong sights for the Mauser? And even better, has anyone who has had this issue and installed a new, higher front sight, had this issue resolved? It seems to me that my rifle fires so high that even a new front sight wouldn't be able to compensate. I dont' know what the Russians did to the damn rifle but they sure made sure nobody would hit them if they ever fired them back at the Red Army...

So what is the LOWEST sight setting on your K98?
I believe the practice was to aim for the belt buckle.
With the european military rifles I have picked up over the years, they ALL shoot high, from my Swiss Vetterli to my wz98a .

What is the sight picture your using?

Perhaps an ammunition difference (grain of ammo is? ... 198gr etc? ... commercial or handloads?), based upon the rifle being set-up and zeroed with something completely different than German 8mm military spec.

Hi...

So I'm using Igman 170 and 198 gr soft point ammo... probably faster loads than the old mil surp stuff...

My sight picture is like the one on the far left, with the front post even with the notch in the sight... the little notch on the bottom of the rear leaf... not even with the top of the slider... maybe I have to find a sight picture more like the 3rd one in!

Can any gunsmiths make an aftermarket one that's higher to accommodate these modern loads? I really like to use the iron sights... and don't really want to revert to a scope.

I found these on the Brownell's web site... do you think they'll work?

Had a similar problem with mine even with 150gr reloads so I stole the front sight of my 30-06 mexican mauser and used some guntite (locktite). Now it shoots just a little low

Zeroed for 300yards... your trajectory path should hit zero at 300. So if yur shooting at 100 your in the apex arc area...

But my Norwegn refurb is zero at 100yds. The sight does not look much taller... But anyhow this is a common issue with RC's mine included.

In WW1, the sights were regulated for an upright running man coming at you.
The troopers were trained to aim at the beltline because any hit would eventually be a mortal one.
Perhaps your sight regulation reflects that philosophy.

If you look closely at the nowregian refurbs, the rear sight notch is cut differently. The Nowregians bevelled out the notch to make i accomodate their .30-06 cartridge and different front sight post. Hence the difference in zero.

I DID IT!!!

Finally... after 20 years of shooting this rifle high... today was the first time it actually shot where I was aiming!!! I'm thrilled!!

So... I bought the Brownell's mauser sight blank... it is 5/8" high... the original one was 3/8" high... I actually found an IDF front sight on EBay that was 1/4", and put that on... I thought that if this one wasn't high enough... I'd move on to the Brownell's blank...

For the first time in 20 years... the rifle is shooting exactly where I aimed it!! The 1/4" high front sight blade is the way to go.... so you can probably grind/file the brownell's one to this height too...

OK You just lost me,,, which new sight did you use to correct the problem,, the IDF 1/4" or the 5/8" Brownell?? Also when you say hit what you aimed at, do you mean zero at 100yards?

Hi,

I used the IDF one... the Brownells one would still be OK... but you'd have to file it down a bit...

Sorry... kinda confusing... I was in a haze of excitement... after 20 years of aiming low... my point of impact is finally the same as my point of aim!

I find most of mine shoot high. Past 100 meters they actually hit as expected.

Anything inside and I definitely aim low, but that's kindof expected considering bullet arc, and the fact that almost all old battle rifle sights are set for 100 yards minimum.
