K98 slings

To make a Web sling you need a fairly complicated machine. To make a leather sling all you need is a knife, needle and thread.

It's not only the slings that were leather, K98, G43, MP44, MG34 Pouches, Y Straps and Leather straps on bread bags and Back Packs, Jackboots, Helmet liners, Binocular Cases, Holsters, Aviator helmets, etc... Leather- Higher Cost, Better quality and workmanship, but longer times to produce.

Several years ago, there was a so-called (Fantasy) Late War webbing sling for the K98 and G43 that was actually from a gas mask kit, but was thought to never be used by the Germans as it had fake markings and a guy was making a killing on eBay selling them until he was outed as a Fraudster. Buyer Beware.

Also beware of new made and artificially aged K98 leather slings with fake markings.

Why were German K98 slings leather? Are there any webbing style slings for the K98?

Before the turn of the last century many products were made of leather. A durable and readily available product. Other textiles came along with advancements as stated earlier with machinery and oil based products much later. Todays modern world products exist because of the R&D during wartime into cheaper made and futuristic items like plastic.

There were still many leather-working firms looking for business in wartime Germany. Huge numbers of often small makers appear to have been given contracts. In fact you seldom ever find two German articles with the same maker's name - and if you do, chances are that both of them are fakes.

I would disagree with you.

Yes there are some that you won't see twice but there are hundreds of well known makers that show up again and again. To say if you find two the same they are fake is dead wrong.

Just a few from the top of my head

Fuq, Dkk, kkd, OK, jmb, cey, bla,
There are also RBNr marked leather goods that show up from the same maker.

I believe it was more about what JP said. To make dependable web slings, belts and accoutrements etc was technology the Germans were probably investigating but not able to mass produce.

This one goes to the Allies (Brits and Americans then trickle down to Canada and Australia/New Zealand). I have an interesting article on this if I can find it on my PC.
