This is a question for the Mauser pros.

My Yugo M98 "Tandzara" sniper has a some play in the stock; fore and aft movement and the handguard moves around a bit. It's still a great shooter mind you:cool:, but I wouldn't mind tightening it up a bit.

I am not wanting to doing any extensive modifications like glass/resin bedding or what have you. Looking for the more "traditional" methods.

I have read Ludwig Olson documents, has anyone tried them out to any success? Is there any other directions I should take? What materials should be used? Or should I just leave it alone, lol.

Thanks

If you want to shoot it, you should not leave it loose. It is only going to get worse. Try out the old methods of bedding, early glues, cork or wood shims were used back in the 1920's even. Good luck and good shooting.

If the action moves fore and aft in the stock, you should probably tighten up the stock screws. A handguard should not touch the barrel so a SLIGHT looseness could be tightened up a bit with a thin shim.

One important thing is to have a slight clearance at the rear of the stock inletting for the receiver tang. If the receiver tang is tight against the wood in this area, it acts as a wedge under recoil, and can split the stock in the wrist area.

My shooter k98 was a little loose fore and aft. I made a shim out of tinfoil, and placed it in front of the recoil lug. Solved any movement issues.

I have learned of another method for behind the tang. Get some thin felt material, soak it in BLO and place it for shim/bedding. Appently this will help with movement as well as act as a buffer against cracking behind the tang. I have yet to try this method, though I thought I would pass it along.
