I have this Russian capture k98 that has markings I've never seen and haven't been able to find any information about. I don't know much about k98s but I'm learning. If anyone can help I'd appreciate it

I have photos but I can't (like many others) figure out how this forums photo system works. Why can't I just drag and drop?

Anyway, the markings are two sets of "nn" underneath the receiver and barrel serial numbers and "66D 139 '39 BO" on top of the barrel above the receiver ring

I can email the photos if anyone wants, thanks

The “nn” are most likely what collectors call “lucky charms” are are not known exactly what they mean, just random numbers and letters underneath receiver that have to do with inspectors during the manufacturing process.

The barrel markings are lot/batch and date info. Your barrel is made from Böhler Steel in 1939.

The “nn” under the barrel and receiver numbers are the serial suffix. They started at 1-9999, then 1-9999a so your rifle went through that alphabet and was restarted at 1-9999aa etc.

The other markings are barrel blank maker, lot, year, then barrel finisher is likely a waffenamt.

Andrew is correct.

I had assumed you meant there were some random “n” marks on the bottom of the receiver.

Are These the lucky charms you are talking about?

Not to try to offend Desert Fox, but these are more considered process marks. “Lucky Charms” are usually found on Radom produced parts, and they are the same kind of idea, a process marking but they use more interesting symbols.

No offence.

I’ve obviously misunderstood the term and what it pertained to. You have a much nicer collection of original matching K98s than I can ever hope to have. My knowledge isn’t as focused as yours. Frankly, German items and K98s have been boring me the past few years, and I’m more into Swedish military firearms and hunting rifles these days.

I mean possibly before I was in the game, the term was broader, but as I understand it now, most guys are referring to the Radom marks.

I have also been tempted by a few Swedes! Any particular focus you have?
